Delaware Valley Takes Two From King's

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Chad Schmuck and Cody Hudnall pitched complete-game gems, including a four-hit shutout by Hudnall, as Delaware Valley College swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from visiting King's College, 4-2 and 4-0.

The two wins on Sunday improved the Aggies' record to 9-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play. The Monarchs saw its marks drop to 8-11 and 3-6.

Schmuck took the mound in the opener and allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out five over the seven innings. The sophomore improved to 2-2 on the year with a 2.08 ERA.

Hudnall moved his record to 3-1as he allowed just four singles and two walks over seven innings. Only one King's player reached scoring position and that was in the first when they had runners on first and second with two outs. Hudnall fanned three to up his season total to 28 in 25-plus innings.

Delaware Valley got on the board first in the opener as Pete O'Hara led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored two batters later on a single by Dan Hrubos. In the third inning, the Aggies put runners on first and third with one out. A potential double-play ball was thrown away, allowing a run to score. With the inning still alive, Mike Ferrier delivered an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage.

King's got one back in the fourth as Chris Sweeney and Eric Bohem drew two-out walks and Rich Acierno followed with a single that plated Sweeney. Delaware Valley answered in its half of the inning O'Hara walked, stole second and scored on a fielding error.

The Monarchs made it 4-2 in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Mike Santiago. Later in the inning, they had runners on second and third with two outs when Delaware Valley intentionally walked Sweeney, who homered twice in King's series-opening win on Friday. Schmuck got the next batter to hit a grounder back to him at the mound and the Aggies got out of the inning. The Monarchs didn't threaten again.

Ferrier and Hrubos each went 2-for-3 with an RBI while O'Hara scored a pair of runs. Tim Marchetti paced King's with a 3-for-3 effort. Joe Dorbad took the loss despite allowing just one earned run and six hits over six innings.

In the nightcap, Delaware Valley produced all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first as four Aggies hit consecutive singles, including RBI knocks by Ferrier and Mike Bodine. They made it 3-0 in the third as Hrubos led off with a doubled and scored on a single by Jake Barben. Barben then led off the sixth with a triple and crossed home plate on Cory Weingart's sacrifice fly to right.

Barben and Bodine were each 2-for-3 with an RBI while Hrubos was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Eric Bohem had two of the Monarchs' four hits. Anthony Sangirardi took the loss.
