DANVILLE, Va. – Casey Mann's RBI single in the eighth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted Guilford College past Averett University, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday. The victory gave Guilford (17-14) a split of the season series with the host Cougars (20-16).

John Macon Smith hit a two-run single in the Quakers' five-run third inning that gave the guests a 5-3 lead. The Cougars answered with a run in the fourth on Cody Moore's RBI single and tied the game in the seventh on a Kyle Newcomb sacrifice fly.

Guilford's Ben Anderson doubled to right with one out in the ninth and took third on Herc Ingels' grounder to short. Mann followed with his second hit of the game, an RBI single up the middle.

Rookie Lou Trosch gave up the tying run in the seventh, but threw a scoreless eighth to earn his third win of the year. Classmate Ryan Lindsay worked around Newcomb's two-out single in the ninth for his team-leading second save of the season.

Jordan Kidd had three hits for Averett. Moore finished with two hits and three RBI. Matt Mitchell (3-4) yielded 11 hits and six runs in eight innings.

The Quakers host Randolph-Macon College Saturday (4/7) for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader that starts at noon.
