Union, N.J. (4/5/12) – The #6/7 Kean University baseball team used a five-run sixth inning to pull away from Rutgers-Camden by the final of 9-2, Thursday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.

Rookie Charles Thielmann (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after tossing five and a third innings of shutout relief.  He allowed just one single while fanning three and walking two to help Kean improve to 17-6 overall and 2-1 in NJAC play.

The Cougars struck first plating a single run in the bottom of the third but the Scarlet Raptors (9-12, 0-3 NJAC) responded right back with two in the top of the fourth as catcher Shaune Collins recorded a two-out RBI single.  Junior Albert Rivera gave Rutgers-Camden a 2-1 advantage with an RBI single of his own.

Kean took the lead for good with a five-spot in the sixth using four hits and two Camden miscues to their aid.  Senior D.J. Breckenridge started off the inning with a walk, and a successful sacrifice and stolen base put him on third with one out.  Sophomore Shane Alvarez recorded an RBI on a groundball that turned into a fielding miscue.  Later in the inning, senior Eddie Jennings delivered an RBI single while senior Dylan Laguna followed with an RBI fielder's choice.  Sophomore Joe O'Connor kept the inning going with an RBI triple and sophomore Nick Zucchero rounded out the scoring with an RBI bunt single.

The Cougars added three more in their half of the seventh as Jennings registered an RBI double and Laguna added an RBI single up the middle.

Kean was led by senior Steve Sanguiliano who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Breckenridge crossed the plate twice adding three stolen bases.  Rutgers-Camden was led by Rivera who finished the day at 2-for-5.

Senior Anthony Cavalier (1-4) suffered the loss for Rutgers-Camden.  He allowed six runs, just two earned, in five and two thirds innings.  He struck out five and walked three, allowing five hits.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow at Campbell's Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
