Cal Lutheran Suffers Weekend Sweep to La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Cal Lutheran held early one run leads in both games of its conference road doubleheader against La Verne on Saturday. However the Leopards scored 14 of their 19 runs from the fifth inning on to hand the Kingsmen 6-3 and 13-3 defeats to sweep the weekend series.

La Verne 6, Cal Lutheran 3 - F
Cal Lutheran collected eight hits with five going for extra bases and three apiece off the bats of Trevor Koons and John Leal. The pair provided both hits in a two-run third inning putting the Kingsmen on the scoreboard first.

La Verne responded in its half of the third with five of the team's 12 hits in the frame. A two-out, two-run Jason Moralez single, followed by an RBI-single from Michael Stewart gave the home side a 3-2 lead after three innings.

Moralez and Stewart again drove in runs on back-to-back at bats in the fifth inning giving the Leopards a 5-2 advantage. The pair combined to go 4-for-10 at the plate with four runs batted in for the game.

ULV relief pitcher Nathan Rollon entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning. Following a force out at home and a strikeout he got the Leopards out of the jam without further damage preserving the three run cushion.

Trailing by four and down to their final out, Kingsmen Trevor Koons and Nick Boggan hit back-to-back doubles closing the gap to 6-3. A dropped third strike allowed Nick DeLorenzo to reach first base bringing the game-tying run to the plate.

Rollon, who had not allowed a run until the ninth inning, got the final out of the game courtesy of his fifth punch out. He earned the win going 4.2 innings and allowed just one run on four hits.

Cal Lutheran starting pitcher Peter Ciaramitaro suffered his first loss of the season allowing six runs over 6.2 innings while striking out five batters. John Leal finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and a triple.

Nick Boggan went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles that sparked early scoring frames. Cal Lutheran erased a 2-0 deficit in the second and a run-scoring groundout from Nick DeLorenzo gave the Kingsmen the lead in the third.

CLU starting pitcher John LaMoure experienced little resistance after the first inning and sat down the first two batters in the fifth. However the next two batters reached base and an RBI-single by Jason Moralez eventually turned into a three-run frame after an error on the play allowed all three Leopards to score.

LaMoure exited after six innings providing a quality start while allowing three earned runs (five total) and striking out five in the process. The La Verne offense as it had in Friday's contest was able to excel against the Cal Lutheran bullpen. La Verne scored eight runs over the final two innings and the game was called with two outs in the bottom of the eighth after Cal Lutheran went down by 10 runs.

Moralez led the Leopards going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in during game two. He finished the day 5-for-9 with eight RBI to lead the Leopards. Teammate Jacob Ludvik went 4-for-5 with two RBI and scored four runs.

ULV starting pitcher Anthony Cerafice tossed 7.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits improving his record to 5-0 this season. The win puts the Leopards (22-10, 17-4 SCIAC) three games clear of the Kingsmen for the top spot in the conference standings.

Cal Lutheran (19-11, 14-7 SCIAC) will host games on back-to-back days starting on Friday, April 13, against Whittier (16-15, 10-11 SCIAC) at 3 p.m.
