Morvan Earns First Collegiate Victory in, 13-3, Win at Johnson and Wales

Providence, R.I.-Freshman Kyle Morvan (Smithfield, RI) picked up his first collegiate win in his first start, while junior second baseman Joan Mustafa (Providence, RI) went 3-for-6, as the Rhode Island College baseball team won their sixth straight game in a 13-3 victory over Johnson & Wales on Monday afternoon.
 
Rhode Island College held a 3-1 lead after five innings of play. The visiting Anchormen then broke the game open in the top of the sixth when they tallied five runs, including a two-run single by sophomore designated hitter Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) for the 8-1 advantage. Johnson & Wales answered in the bottom of the frame when junior James Reyes (Providence, RI) singled and later scored on a RIC miscue.  The Anchormen added to their lead in the top of the eighth when they pushed across eight runs, including a two-run double by junior third baseman Cody Ortega (Kissimmee, FL) to take the 13-2 lead.  RIC then cruised to the 13-3 victory.
 
Senior left fielder Brent Hopkins (Cranston, RI) went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in the win, while Mustafa chipped in with three runs scored and two RBI for the Anchormen. Sophomore Alex Pezzuto (Hastings, NY) was 2-for-3 in the loss for JWU.
 
Morvan picked up the win (1-0) in his fifth appearance, giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Freshman John Amodeo (Mahopac, NY) took the loss for JWU, allowing seven runs on eight hits in five and two third innings.
 
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, April 10 (3:30 p.m.).
