Barnes powers Pointers to Saturday sweep of Superior

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) tallied seven hits and four RBIs as he helped lead the 12th-ranked Pointers to a doubleheader sweep of the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior Saturday afternoon at University Field. UWSP won game one 13-5 and followed up with an 11-2 victory in game two.

Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) began the scoring for the Pointers in the first inning of game one as he plated Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) on a single. UWSP tacked on three more runs in the inning for an early 4-0 lead as Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North), Max Mittelstaedt (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh North) and Barnes all plated runs.

In the second, the Pointers added to their lead on a Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) sacrifice fly to gain a five-run advantage.

UWS scratched out two runs in the top half of the third inning after taking advantage of a Pointer error. Tony Remund plated the first run of the inning on a single to left field and Jeff Miller grounded into a fielder's choice to score another run to cut the lead to 5-2 in favor of UWSP.

The Pointers regained momentum as they tallied runs in three of the next four innings. Barnes, Mittelstaedt, Jirschele and Gerber each plated run to extend their lead to 10-2 leading into the seventh.

In the seventh inning, the Yellowjackets posted two runs on RBI singles from Miller and Rob Veith to bring to the score to 10-4.

UWSP answered back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own and added another in the eighth on an RBI double by Clark resulting in a 13-5 final score.

Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) (2-0) earned the victory after pitching eight innings and allowing five runs, three earned, while striking out five and walking one.

Nick Bursik (1-4) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, five earned in three innings of work.

Barnes and Gerber led the Pointers with three hits and two RBI while Schilter, Jerschele and Clark also recorded two hits.

In the nightcap, UWSP tallied three runs in the first on hits from Jirschele, Gerber and Barnes for an early 3-0 advantage.

The Pointers increased their lead to 5-0 after plating run in the third and fifth innings on a sacrifice fly from Clark and an RBI single by Barnes.

In the sixth, freshmen Clay Giese (Plover, WI/SPASH) and Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) each reached on bunt hits and Douglas connected on his first home run of the season as he took Dan Genrich's offering over the left field fence for an 8-0 lead.

UWS plated its only two runs of the game in the seventh but UWSP answered back with two in the bottom half and one in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep with an 11-2 win.

JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) (2-0) allowed five hits in six innings while striking out eight. Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) earned the save with three innings of work in relief.

Genrich (3-2) allowed 10 runs, nine earned, in six innings of work for the Yellowjackets.

Barnes led the team again in game two with four hits and two RBI while Gerber also tallied three hits and three RBI.

UW-Stevens Point (16-8, 8-4 WIAC) returns to action on Sunday afternoon to conclude the season series with UW-Superior at University Field in Stevens Point. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.
