UMF drops doubleheader to Bobcats

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Bates College bagged a pair of non-conference wins over the University of Maine at Farmington today as the Bobcats beat the Beavers 8-1, 10-0 at Hippach Field.

The Beavers ended their 2012 season at 8-28, while the Bobcats improved to 18-15. Bates is scheduled to visit Colby College Saturday for a New England Small College Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at noon.

In the first game, Bates jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to the 8-1 win over the Beavers.

Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) singled three times, doubled and drove in a run for the Bobcats, while Ryan Curit (South Portland, Maine) went 4 for 4 at the plate with an RBI.

Bates parlayed three walks, two hits and an error in the first to build its 4-0 command. Curit delivered an RBI single in the frame. The Bobcats pushed across two more runs in the second on a Ciummei RBI double and a Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.) run-scoring grounder for a
6-0 lead and another pair in the fifth for an 8-0 lead. UMF got on the board in the sixth with an RBI single by Matthew Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine).

Woodbury smacked two singles for the Beavers.

Dean Bonneau (Amherst, Mass.) went four innings for Bates to earn the win. Bonneau walked one and struck out three.

Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) was hit with the loss with 10 hits allowed, five walks and eight strikeouts. The senior Gallagher and classmate Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) were honored prior to the game for their dedication to UMF baseball.

In game two, Bates exploded for nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to defeat the Beavers 10-1 in the nightcap.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead after four innings, Kevin Davis (Andover, Mass.) cranked a grand-slam home run in the fifth to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. Ciummei, Davis and Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) each had a run-scoring hit in the sixth as the Bobcats scored five times for a 10-0 cushion.

Brett Wallingford (Sanford, Maine) singled twice for UMF, which scored on a Ben Pearson (North Stonington, Conn.) RBI single in the seventh.

Davis finished with a single and a double to go along with his fifth-inning blast with Ciummei and Jeffrey Gunn (Atlanta, Ga.) each smacking a single and a double. Curit, Sonberg and Alex Parker (Lewiston, Maine) each offered a two-hit game for the Bobcats.

Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine) tossed 5.1 innings in defeat. Ashey gave up 13 hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Chris Fusco (Annapolis, Md.) held the Beavers to two hits over five innings with a walk and three strikeouts to notch the win.
