Strong Pitching Helps Oswego State Sweep Keuka

More news about: Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State baseball (17-19) pitching staff allowed just four hits during the 14 innings of a 5-0 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep of Keuka College (2-22) on Wednesday.

In game one, Adam Bishop (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) and Dylan Kohlman (Fr., Vestal, N.Y.) combined to give up just one hit, while striking out 10 and walking no one. In game two, Brady Farkas (Sr., Clifton Park, N.Y.), Michael Putillo (Fr., Brewster, N.Y.), Sheldon Paura (Fr., West Monroe, N.Y.) and Jon Silva (Jr., Mexico, N.Y.) all took the mound, fanning 10 and walking just one.

The opener began with the Storm's only hit of the game, but Ben Przepiora was doubled up on a fly ball to right field to end the top of the first inning.

The Lakers used that momentum to score twice in the bottom of the first. Scott Buniak (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) singled with one out to start the rally before David Mazzullo (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) blasted a triple to right center for the 1-0 lead. Mazzullo scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Miller (Sr., Montoursville, Pa.).

That was all the offense Bishop needed. The starter worked four innings, striking out seven and allowing just two more base runners, both on errors in the fourth. Kohlman entered in the fifth inning, retiring all nine batters he faced with two strikeouts.

The Lakers added insurance runs in the second, third and sixth innings.

Mike Stark (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) singled and scored in the second, while Mazzullo walked and scored on the second sacrifice fly from MIller in the third. Buniak walked and scored on a single by Miller in the sixth as well.

Game two featured a six-run second inning for the Lakers, blowing the game wide open.

After the Storm used a lead-off walk to score in the top of the second, the Lakers bounced back with a big inning.

Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.) started things off with a single before Kris Prikazsky (Sr., Endicott, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and Tyler Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases with one out.

John Rauseo (Fr., Mattituck, N.Y.) started the scoring with a double, driving in two runs. Stark, Mazzullo, and Miller all followed with singles before another double by Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) pushed the lead to 6-1.

Farkas fanned two more hitters in the third inning before leaving the game with six strikeouts. Putillo pitched the next three innings with three stikeouts, while Paura and Silva combined to pitch a perfect seventh inning.

Offensively, Steve Roman (Sr., Middletown, N.Y.) singled and scored on an error in the third, while Mike Tarnowski (Jr., Dunkirk, N.Y.) doubled and touched home in the fifth. Ed Charles (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) added the final run when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jurcznyski.

Stark, Mazzullo and Miller all finished with two hits to pace the offense, while Farkas was credited with the victory.

Oswego State plays its final conference games of the season this weekend at Fredonia on Friday and Saturday, as the Lakers make a push for a playoff berth.
