Pointers belt 16 hits in game one; Split with Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, belting 16 hits and plating 13 runs in a 13-0 seven-inning victory in game one before falling 6-4 in game two.

Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton)'s sacrifice fly drove in a run in the game's opening inning to give UWSP the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Pointers tacked on four more runs thanks to an RBI singles by Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) and Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) before Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) doubled to left center, driving in a pair.

In the fifth, the Pointers plated seven runs, thanks to a Coady 3 RBI triple and RBIs from Clay Giese (Plover, WI/SPASH), Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) and Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville), pulling in front 12-0.

A Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North) bases-loaded walk in the seventh drove in the Pointers final run of game one, giving UWSP the 13-0 edge.

Starter Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) pitched a scoreless seventh, earning his fifth win of the season and fifth complete game. Seidl allowed just two hits and struck out two in seven innings.

Schilter finished the day with four hits and Jirschele collected three while Coady led the way with four RBIs while Barnes and Hanke each tacked on two.

In game two, the Pointers again took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Riley Spetz (Sevastopol, WI/Sevastopol) reached on a fielders choice, scoring Giese.

The Warhawks plated two runs in the third to pull in front 2-1 and tacked on another run in the fourth to take a 3-1 edge.

The Pointers battled back to retake the lead in the sixth, 4-3, as Schilter drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field and Gerber drove in another with a sacrifice fly, scoring Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy).

The lead did not last, as the Warhawks scored three runs in the seventh, pulling back in front 6-4.

UWW held on from there, shutting down the Pointers bats to secure the split.

JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) started game two for the Pointers, but did not factor in the decision after allowing three runs, all earned, in three innings of work. Zach Wendorf (Merrill, WI/Merrill) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief, not allowing a hit.

C. Barnes collected three of UWSP's nine hits in game two.

No. 13 UW-Stevens Point (25-9, 13-5 WIAC) and UW-Whitewater (20-13, 10-8 WIAC) return to action on Monday, April 30 with another doubleheader at Prucha Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
