UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point split a pair of games Sunday at Prucha Field in James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater with game one going in favor of the Pointers, 13-0 in seven innings, and game two going to the Warhawks, 6-4. The Warhawks are now 20-13 overall and 10-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Pointers are 25-9 overall and 13-5 in the WIAC.
The Warhawks were unable to muster much offensive output in game one. Unfortunately for UW-W the Pointers did not have the same problem. Stevens Point notched a run in the first, four in the fourth, seven in the fifth, and one more in the seventh. The game ended after seven due to the ten-run rule.
Pointer pitcher Cam Seidl only gave up two hits to UW-W, one by Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) and one by Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker). He also walked one batter, struck out two and didn't allow anyone past first base the entire game.
In game two the Warhawks fell behind 1-0 after two but came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second when Beyer followed with another single. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington). Cladis came in to score the first Warhawk run of the day on a Jared Fon (Germantown) ground out. Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) followed with a single up the middle to plate Beyer and give UW-W the lead.
UW-W added one to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) scored on a Cladis grounder.
Stevens Point regained the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth scoring three runs on four hits. A bases loaded single to right center scored the first two and a sacrifice fly to center scored the third.
The Warhawks came back to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Darien) singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Beyer single. Beyer scored to give UW-W the lead, again, when Friend doubled down the right field line on the next at bat. The lead ballooned to 6-4 when the next batter, Fon, singled to drive in Friend.
Michael Huckabay (Jefferson/Jefferson) came on in relief to earn the win pitching three and two thirds, giving up four hits, one walk and one strikeout. Huckabay is 1-1 this season.
Beyer, Fon and Bartlein collected two hits apiece and Fon tallied two RBIs.
The Pointers and Warhawks will play again on Monday in a doubleheader at Prucha Field in James B. Miller Stadium on the campus of UW-Whitewater. The games are slated to begin at one.
