THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran baseball season came to a close on Monday afternoon at "Sparky" Anderson Field following a 16-4 loss to Chapman. The Panthers broke open a tie game with 13 runs over a span of two innings.

Box Score: CU 16, CLU 4 - F

Cal Lutheran knew it would be facing a Chapman (18-19) squad that would likely be throwing its ace Brian Rauh. The Kingsmen would need to play near flawless baseball against the Panthers pitcher who had a collegiate record of 29-1 heading into the day.

The Kingsmen took a patient approach at the plate and were rewarded early on with a first inning score. A walk and single on full count offerings, followed by a pair of stolen bases and a Nick Boggan RBI-groundout put CLU out front.

Chapman immediately responded with back-to-back hits to open the second inning. It was the first earned run given up at home by Cal Lutheran starting pitcher Peter Ciaramitaro (6-3) in more than 36 consecutive innings on the mound.

He limited the damage to a single run in the second, but Chapman broke open a 1-1 tie with five runs in the fourth inning and eight more in the fifth. The Panthers took a commanding 14-1 lead and added two more runs in the sixth. Over the middle three innings Chapman collected 13 of its 16 hits in the game.

Rauh (8-1) was forced into deep counts by the Kingsmen hitters whom ran up the pitch count of the Panthers ace to 100 through five innings. A pinch-hit RBI-single from Elon Goldman, followed by a four pitch walk issued to Kevin Leonard loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth.

However Rauh escaped further damage and stranded the bases full courtesy of his sixth strikeout. It was the final batter he would face allowing four hits and issuing two walks in Monday's outing. Rauh has started and earned the win in the each of the past three annual meetings between the two teams.

A two-out, two-run eighth inning single off the bat of Tyler Kem capped the scoring. Koons and Goldman led the Kingsmen with two hits apiece.

Tyler Surnbrock led the Chapman offense going 4-for-5 including a pair of triples. He finished with four runs batted in and scored three times. Teammates Mark Saatzer, Connor Battaglia, and Steven Greenberg finished with three hits and two RBI apiece in the victory.

CLU had held the opposition to a total of six runs and committed just two errors over its previous five games. On Monday, the Kingsmen gave up 16 runs and committed six errors, both season-highs.

Cal Lutheran (23-15) finished the 2012 season with its 24th straight winning record. The four-year seniors finished their careers with a 109-54 record and an appearance in the 2009 NCAA playoffs.
