MARIETTA, Ohio—Sophomore right-hander Chris Thomas (Canton/Perry) hurled his first career complete game and senior Elvin Williams (Euclid) went 3-for-5 with a home run to lead the No. 3 seed Heidelberg University baseball team to a 6-1 win over No. 2 seed the University of Mount Union in the first day of the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta, Ohio. The Student Princes will face No. 1 seed and defending OAC and NCAA champion Marietta College tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Thomas scattered five hits and struck out seven Purple Raiders while issuing just two walks and improved to 5-4.

Heidelberg (26-15, 11-7 OAC) threatened in the top of the first inning with a pair of singles from sophomore designated hitter Joe Chiarappa (Clinton/St. Vincent-St. Mary's) to lead off the game and senior right fielder Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo/Start), but Connor Mathis made a sharp throw from right field on a single by Williams to get Chiarappa trying to score from second base to end the inning.

In the third, Lizcano and freshman first baseman Eric Monroe (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) blooped a pair of hits into the outfield and Williams capitalized with a two-run double as the Student Princes assumed a 2-0 lead.

A RBI fielder's choice by Chiarappa in the fourth extended the 'Berg lead to 3-0.

Thomas, in a jam with two on and two outs in the sixth, fanned Zach Carlino to work out of the frame.

Williams followed a RBI single by Monroe in the seventh with a two-run home run that was blasted down the right field line and the Berg quickly vaulted to a 6-0 lead, chasing starting pitcher Carlino from the mound.

Anthony Morino finally got Mount Union (27-14, 13-5 OAC) on the board in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Williams was a triple off the cycle and finished the day with four RBI and one run scored. Chiarappa was 2-for-5 with a double and a run, Monroe was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs. Lizcano and sophomore shortstop Andrew Zenzcak (Brunswick) also had multi-hit games.

Connor Mathis, the OAC's leading hitter, was 2-for-4 at the plate for Mount Union.

Carlino allowed all six 'Berg runs on 12 hits and struck out two over 6.2 innings and was tagged with the loss to fall to 6-2. Beau Smith recorded the final seven outs and allowed one hit.

Heidelberg will face Marietta tomorrow. The two teams have met for the OAC championship in each of the last five seasons and have met in the tournament in every season 2003. The Berg is 17-5 in the OAC tournament against the Pioneers since 2003.
