BOX SCORE

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist baseball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a come-from-behind 5-2 win over Roanoke College at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Monarchs (2-0) rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the sixth inning to remain perfect all-time (8-0) against the Maroons (0-2).

After Tyler Younger had tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Travis Johnson, the Monarchs struck for three runs in the eighth inning to earn the win.

After a leadoff groundout, Younger singled to left and moved to third on Chris Power's single and a Roanoke miscue in the field. Pinch hitter David Lutz then laid down a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher that scored Younger and gave MU a 3-2 lead. Will Sutton followed with a groundout back to the pitcher that scored Power and Stephen Nalls' single to right center scored pinch runner Will Buschamann for a 5-2 lead.

Daniel Royer, who had come on in the seventh inning, then set down Roanoke in order in the ninth, inducing a popup from Brian Kluge to end the game. Royer (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Michael Inman, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just one hit and did not walk anybody while striking out a pair. Inman earned a no decision with 7.0 strong innings. He surrendered two runs (0 ER) on seven hits and struck out six while not yielding a walk.

The Monarchs had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Nalls scored on a wild pitch. Roanoke came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning on Nick Sburlati's two-out RBI single to right. The Maroons then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth with an unearned run.

Cameron Holshouser started for the Maroons and allowed just two runs on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Austin Gregory was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Nalls finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI for the Monarchs. Power was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored and two stolen bases and Younger finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Kluge finished 2-for-5 with a runs scored for Roanoke, and Nick Sburlati added two hits in four at-bats with an RBI.

Methodist will now travel to LaGrange for a three-game series next weekend. Game one is set to begin on Friday evening at 6:00 pm.
