Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College to post their first victory of the 2013 campaign. Randolph-Macon edged the Seahawks, 4-3, in the first half of the twin-bill before St. Mary's shut out the Yellow Jackets, 4-0, in the nightcap.

Senior RHP Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the second game, scattering just four hits and throwing a season-best six strikeouts against only one walk in 5.0 innings pitched.

St. Mary's (1-2) owned a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second with three runs on three hits. Sophomore second baseman Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) connected on a two-out single to score junior leftfielder Eric Skrzyniarz (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill). Senior outfielder Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) followed suit with a two-RBI single, bringing home Green and first-year right-fielder Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur), to give his team a three-run cushion.

The Seahawks sealed the win in the fourth inning as sophomore catcher Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) drew a walk with two outs and Skrzyniarz, who drew a lead-off walk, came home. Green paced the St. Mary's offense in the nightcap with a 2-for-3 effort while Schmidt had two RBI. Junior reliever Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

The Seahawks staked a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the first game behind an RBI double by senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) to score Eaker. The team doubled their lead in the fifth as Napier brought home Schmidt, who had connected on a lead-off double.

R-MC (2-1) responded in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs to knot the contest at 2-2. Senior Jake Fletcher (Deltaville, Va.) drove in the first run with a single while senior Jeb Weymouth's (Rockville, Va.) sac fly centerfield brought home the game-tying run.

St. Mary's grabbed a 3-2 lead in the seventh as Green came home on an error by the R-MC leftfielder. Down one run in the final inning, the Yellow Jackets notched the game-tying run as Fletcher drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home first-year Nick Williamson (Chesterfield, Va.). Weymouth drove in the game-winning run with a one-out single to score senior Austin Carpenter (Richmond, Va.).

Eaker paced the Seahawks in the first game with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate while Napier tallied two RBI. Senior reliever Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) suffered the loss on the mound as Cruz (0-1) gave up the game-winning run on two hits in 0.1 innings pitched.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, February 16 when St. Mary's welcomes the City College of New York Beavers for a non-conference doubleheader at the Hawk's Nest. First pitch is slated for 11:00 am.
