LEXINGTON, VA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University allowed just six hits over nine innings, but couldn't score in the final two frames with a man on second base, after tying the game in the top of the seventh as host Washington & Lee University edged NJCU, 5-4, in game one of a non-conference doubleheader played on February 16.

NJCU (0-2) dropped its second consecutive one-run game to open the 2013 campaign in southwestern Virginia. W&L improved to 3-0 in what is believed to be the first meeting between the schools in baseball. It was the earliest calendar date NJCU has played a doubleheader in the 66-year history of the program. The earliest previous twinbill was a February 21, 2009 doubleheader at Farmingdale State College.

Senior center fielder MICHAEL PATTERSON (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) was 2-for-4 with one run while increasing his average to .571 after two games.

Junior left fielder ANDREW RIVERA (Edison, NJ/Edison) was 2-for-5 with a double and RBI while sophomore transfer third baseman NICHOLAS D'ERRICO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) scored twice. Sophomore first baseman ALEX WEINSTEIN (Colonia, NJ/JFK-Iselin) was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple and a run scored.

Freshman starting right-hander TOMMY TRELA (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) made his NCAA debut and only allowed five runs and five hits in 6.2 innings, fanning four versus three walks.

Freshman righty BRANDON CHARLES (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) allowed one hit in the seventh inning before senior left-hander PEDRO GARCIA (North Bergen, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) threw the final 1.1 innings of the game, striking out four of the five batters he faced against one walk.
