PASADENA, CA – Whittier completed a three-game sweep of the Caltech baseball team on Saturday afternoon by taking both games of a doubleheader.

Game One -- Whittier 14, Caltech 0

The Poets got on the board in the first inning when Stephen Zavala and Jonathan Whipple each knocked in a run in giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Caltech responded in their half of the first as they put the first two runners on-base but couldn't squeeze home any runs.

Zavala added onto the Whittier lead in the third inning when he drove home Casey Jensen. The score remained 3-0 Poets until the fifth inning when they plated two unearned runs.

Caltech's next chance came in the sixth inning as they loaded the base with one-out but Whittier, once again, worked out of the jam. Whittier put the game out of reach by scoring runs in the final three innings.

Zavala's 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored and two RBI's paced the Poets at the plate. Alex Mitchell chipped in a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI.

Whittier starter Thomas Hemmington settled down after walking the first two batters of the game. The sophomore went seven innings and struck out 11 while giving up two hits.

Daniel Chou battled all day on the mound for the Beavers. He worked into the ninth inning before getting relieved. The first-year went eight innings and struck out two.

Albie Lavin put together a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 afternoon.

Game Two – Whittier 15, Caltech 4

Whittier scored in the first three innings of the game then put the game out of reach with two big innings late in the contest.

The Poets offense put five runs on the board through three innings which was enough for starting pitcher Matt Webster. The first-year held the Beavers to two hits while striking out four in the first three innings.

After neither team crossed the plate in the fourth inning, Whittier proceeded to tack on four runs in the fifth. Jonathan Whipple and Alex Mitchell each hit home runs to aid in the big inning.

Caltech fought back with a big inning of their own in the sixth inning. Brian Penserini and Mason Freedman each drove in a run with back-to-back extra base hits. Blaine Matullevich drove in his first run of the year while Scott Yantek also provided an RBI to get the Beavers deficit to 9-4.

Whittier put the game away in the seventh inning by scoring six runs. During the frame they strung together three hits and took advantage of a Beavers error. A Corey Jensen single that scored Alex Mitchell and Armando Valdez proved to be a big blow.

Webster ended up going six innings to get the win on the mound. He struck out six while walking just one. The Poets bats were led by Jensen's 2-for-3 effort. The junior also drove in two and scored an additional two.

Mason Freedman had a multi-hit game as the senior went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
