HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – After forfeiting an early lead, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (1-1) fell to non-conference Hampden-Sydney College (3-6-1), 6-2, on Saturday in their first contest of the Ty Cobb Classic on Saturday.

Despite recording a quality start in his first outing of the season, junior starting pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) suffered the loss in Saturday's contest. Grann tossed seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Hampden-Sydney's Zach Whitaker improved his record to 2-0 on the season by earning the win. Whitaker threw the complete nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two.

The Hawks got on the board first in Saturday's matchup, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. Junior designated hitter David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) opened the inning with a single, and then advanced to second after sophomore right fielder Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) singled as well. Junior second baseman Kenny Gentile (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) dropped down a successful sacrifice bunt to put both Lostaglio and Gentile in scoring position. Senior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) opened the scoring with an RBI single that plated Lostaglio and moved Guido up to third. Senior right fielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) followed with the fourth single of the inning to score Guido and put the Hawks up 2-0.

Hampden-Sydney scored its first run in the fourth when center fielder Andrew Tucker hit a solo homerun off Grann. A wild pitch in the seventh scored first baseman Jeff Gray from third, then catcher Jack Elliott singled in Tucker to take a 3-2 lead.

Junior relief pitcher Mike Pastorino (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay) entered the game in the eighth inning in relief of Grann, but the Hampden-Sydney scoring continued as the Tigers put up three more runs in the eighth.

Guido went 2-for-3 and scored a run on the afternoon for the Hawks, while Carr and Repetto each picked up an RBI. Elliott went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Hampden-Sydney, while Gray and Tucker each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Hawks play their second and final matchup of the Ty Cobb Classic tomorrow, Feb. 24, as they take on Rutgers-Camden with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
