The No. 2-ranked Tommies opened their 2013 baseball season with Sunday night's 3-0, 8-3 sweep of Coe College at the Metrodome. Three Tommie pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and UST's had no errors in the field.

In game one, junior All-America Steve Maher threw a three-hit shutout of the Kohawks, a 29-win, NCAA playoff team in 2012. Junior Tim Kuzniar's two-run double in the fourth snapped a scoreless tie. Senior DH Dylan Thomas added a sacrifice fly.

In game two, UST had a rare Metrodome night with three home runs, solo shots by junior Ryan Gerber, Thomas and Kuzniar. Senior Jon Kinsel drove in three runs and had three of UST's 12 hits.

Junior transfer Joey Toedt pitched well in his St. Thomas debut. He allowed just one run in 3 1-3 innings and retired the first nine batters he faced. Thomas pitched the final 3 2-3 innings and struck out eight.

Coe All-America OF Nick Stein hit a two-run homer in the fourth to pull the Kohawks within 4-2. But Thomas and Kuzniar hit back-to-back homers to lead off the fifth inning.

St. Thomas plays back in the Metrodome Monday March 4 against St. Scholastica in an 11:30 a.m. twinbill.
