FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College ran its winning streak to five in a row with an 11-0 non-conference baseball victory at the University of Mary Washington in a game that was stopped after eight innings due to darkness.
Freshman righthander Justin Petock turned in a strong performance in his first career start. Petock worked seven innings and allowed just five base hits. He struck out three and walked just one batter. Ryan Leake, another freshman make his first college appearance, pitched a hitless eighth inning to finish off the shutout.
The Eagles gave Petock all the runs he would need in the top of the first inning. With two outs and nobody on, Jonathan Mason walked and Andrew Hacker and Derrik Walling both singled to load the bases. Christian Armstrong then delivered a two-run single for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead. Walling and Armstrong pulled off a double steal and Zach Hynes followed with a two-run single to put the Eagles on top 4-0.
Bridgewater added single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and six innings to take an 8-0 lead.
In the second, the Eagles loaded the bases again, but this time came up with just one run on a run-scoring single by Hacker to make the score 5-0.
The Eagles loaded the sacks again in the fourth, but once again managed just a single rum, this one scoring on a groundout by Hynes that put the Eagles on top 6-0.
In the fifth, Nick Fulk singled, swiped second and then scored on a base hit by Walling to push the lead to 7-0.
In the sixth, Darren Yoder singled and Bryan Sanderson walked. Yoder scored from second on a base hit by Nick Fulk to make it 8-0.
Bridgewater completed the scoring with three runs in the eighth inning. Brendan Howell led off with a walk and moved to second on a single to left by Yoder. With two outs, Mason plated both runners with a double to right-center, making the score 10-0. Mason scored on a single by Hacker for the final run of the game.
The Eagles pounded the Mary Washington pitching staff for 17 hits in the game. Hacker, who entered the game with a .600 batting average, raised that mark with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and two RBIs. Fulk and Yoder also finished the contest with three hits each. Mason, Walling, Armstrong and Hynes each delivered two hits. Hynes drove in three runs while Mason and Armstrong each added a pair of RBIs.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they open conference play at home with a doubleheader against Randolph-Macon College.
