Longview, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Cru could never overcome that early deficit in a 6-2 loss to LeTourneau University Friday evening in Longview. UMHB falls to 3-6 on the year with the loss. The Yellowjackets improve to 8-1 on the year with the victory.

LeTourneau grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind just one hit. Two UMHB errors, two passed balls and two walks helped lead to the big frame. The Yellowjackets added single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings to stretch the lead to 6-0. The Cru battled back in the top of the eighth inning. Zach Whiddon's sacrifice fly cut it to 6-1 and Seth Mogavero added an RBI double. UMHB put two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but could not close the gap.

Garrett Webb had two of the Cru's seven hits in the game. Kreece Cooper took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. Cooper scattered four hits and gave up three earned runs in three innings of work. Three UMHB relievers combined to give up just one run over the final five innings. Three different players had two or more hits for LeTourneau. Cody Whitley picked up the win after striking out nine and giving up six hits in eight innings of work.

The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow in Longview. UMHB will then return home to host a five-game home stand next week at Red Murff Field.
