Game 1: Occidental 7, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6

LOS ANGELES – The Occidental College baseball team's two home runs trumped its three throwing errors in a 7-6 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Game 2 of a three-game series with the Stags, and the first game of a doubleheader at Anderson Field on Saturday.

Jonathan Wong (Grizzly Flats) hit his first career home run – a three-run shot down the left-field line -- and Johnathan Brooks (Huntington Beach) hit his first home run of the season to help the Tigers (9-2, 3-2 SCIAC) overcome throwing errors by Victor Munoz (La Verne), Logan Allen (Atascadero) and Riley Smith (Bellevue, Wash.).

Wong's shot, that went screaming toward the foul pole in left, brought home A.J. Libunao (Huntington Beach) and Munoz, giving Oxy a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

But shaky defensive play kept the door open for the Stags (2-10, 1-7 SCIAC) throughout the game.

In the top of the fourth, CMS' Jack Witte hit a sacrifice fly that scored Brett Watanabe. As the throw was late to the plate, Munoz, Oxy's catcher, tried to gun down Scott Witte at third, but overthrew Libunao and Witte was able to cross the plate. Two batters later, Dustin Green hit a routine grounder to short that Allen fielded cleanly, but his throw to first one-hopped Pedro Aldape (Sherman Oaks,) pulling the first baseman off the bag for would have been the third out of the inning as Ray Hurwitz crossed the plate, making it 6-4.

Brooks, who finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs, answered with a solo home run to right in the bottom half of the fourth, putting Oxy up 7-4. It ended up being insurance Oxy needed as the Stags took advantage of Smith's error in the fifth to extend the inning and score a run, and then added one more in the sixth, making it 7-6.

CMS' William Knowles led off the top of the first with a solo home run to left.

In the bottom of the second, Oxy capitalized on CMS starter Austin Gomez' command problems to score three runs. Munoz and Alec Strain (Sacramento) started the rally with consecutive singles. Then Wong got hit by a pitch, Smith walked and Brooks walked – all with the bases loaded – to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead after two.

Mitch Margolis (Calabasas) picked up the victory for the Tigers, giving up two runs in five innings of work. Gomez was charged with the loss.

Munoz was 1 for 4 with two runs, Wong finished 1 for 2 with four RBIs, Libunao went 1 for 3 with two runs, and Strain was 2 for 3.

Game 2 of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
