Marietta College takes two from Anderson on opening day

XENIA, Ohio – No. 3 ranked Marietta College opened the 2013 season wit a doubleheader sweep of Anderson University (Ind.) Monday (March 4) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game 4-3 in 10 innings and then took game two by the score of 7-3.

Freshman Tyler Packanik's infield single in the top of the tenth inning scored Alex Toth with the winning run. Toth started the inning off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Bryan Gregorich. Toth moved up 90 feet on a ground out off the bat of Ryan Hanahan.

Anderson (1-3 overall) got a lead off single in the bottom of the inning from Austin Young. The Ravens attempted to sacrifice Young into scoring position but Marietta pitcher Evan Brockmeier's throw beat Young at second for the first out. A double play secured the win for Marietta.

Anderson jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. A questionable call at third base allowed the Ravens to score in the inning.

With one out, Jacob Craft was hit by a pitch. Zack Hufferd singled to left and Craft tried to go first to third. The throw from Mitch Geers was on the money at third, but Craft was called safe.

Cole Heberling followed with an infield single scoring Craft and moving Hefferd to third. Ryan McPike grounded back to Brockmeier on the mound and Hefferd was caught in a rundown for the second out.

Austin Young put the Ravens up 3-0 with a two-run double to left field. McPike and Heberling scored on the extra base hit.

The Etta Express (2-0) scored three in the seventh to tie the game. Packanik reached on a one-out single, his first career base hit. Following a fly out, Brockmeier doubled down the left field scoring Packanik. Brockmeier moved to third on the play at the plate.

Aaron Hopper walked and quickly stole second. With two on and two out, Josh Ungerbuehler singled through the left side scoring both Brockmeier and Hopper.

Brockmeier finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. He picked up the win on the mound in relief. Brockmeier (1-0) pitched the final 3.0 innings and gave up no runs on two hits.

Senior Mike Mulvey started on the mound and threw 7.0 innings. Mulvey was charged with three runs, all earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Geers was 2-for-5 with a double, while Packanik went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his debut.

Brian Page (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Anderson. Page threw 3.1 innings and gave up one run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Dan Schmitz started and pitched 6.o innings of shutout ball. He walked four and struck out four.

Blake Hall relieved Schmitz in the seventh and was touched up for three runs, all earned, on three hits with a walk.

In the second game Marietta scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead over the Ravens. Sophomore left-handed pitchers Stephen Bascom and Anthony Knittel kept the Anderson offense off balance for most of the game.

Bascom (1-0) started and went 6.0 innings to get the win. He allowed three runs, all earned, on eight hits. Knittel got his first save of the young season with 3.0 innings of shutout relief. Knittel gave up two hits, walked a pair and struck out three.

Jordan Grilliot and Brockmeier each went 2-for-5 for the Pioneers. Brockmeier scored twice and had a triple.

Tyler Watson (0-2) started and got the loss for the Ravens. Watson threw 4.0 innings allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Marietta is off until Sunday (March 10) when they take on Montclair State University (N.J.) and the College of Wooster in Port Charlotte, Fla.
