MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Manhattanville baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader against the Manchester Spartans on Sunday afternoon. The Valiants lost the first game by a score of 7-3 and the second game by a 2-10 mark.

In game one, defending Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) was touched up for seven runs on eight hits over 2 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Zack Zareva (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) made his season debut while pitching two scoreless innings and allowing only one hit and walking a pair.

Next to the hill was junior Ryan Blinderman (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde), who like Zareva allowed just one hit and two walks in two innings of work. V.J Collins was next in line to pitch and walked one while getting the final out of the seventh inning. Freshman Jason Cosentino (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) came on to finish the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed just one hit over his inning of work.

At the plate, the Valiants got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning when sophomore Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) reached on a one out single, and two batters later was chased around by a double off the bat of junior Hans Arias (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond).

The Spartans got all seven of their runs in the bottom of the third inning with the big blow coming on a bases-clearing triple.

Manhattanville scratched another run across in the fifth inning when Brady led off with an infield single. Two batters later, Arias singled followed by sophomore Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) reaching on an error to load the bases. Freshman Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) picked up an RBI by way of the groundout, but that's all that the Valiants could do with a bases loaded situation.

In the eighth, the Valiants got one final run when Hommen singled to lead off the frame and three batters later sophomore Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) tripled in the gap to right-centerfield to bring around his rookie teammate to cap of the scoring at 7-3.

In game two the Valiants sent junior college transfer Spencer Samelson (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) to the bump for his first start with Manhattanville. The junior pitched well allowing one run on four hits while lasting five innings in the start. Freshman Julian Ponce (Port Chester, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to bridge the gap to the rest of the bullpen, who were not as successful as Ponce this time around.

After Ponce, graduate student Donny Pitasi (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) allowed a pair of runs on four hits while only getting one batter out. Collins came on to pitch in the second game of the double-dip and also allowed a pair of runs on two hits while getting out of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) had the lone successful stint in the late inning for the Manhattanville relief core, as he allowed just a hit and a walk in 2/3 of an inning of work. Senior Bashir Masani (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) made his season debut and allowed five runs on four hits while retiring the final four outs of the game for the Manchester offense.

At the plate in game two, the Spartans got on the board first with their lone run off of Samelson. The Valiants answered back with a run of their own after having a solid opportunity to jump all over Manchester in the first. Senior Johnny LoVetere (Southbury, Conn./Canterbury), Euvino and Brady all reached base to start off the inning, and two batters later Guerra flew out to right to chase home Euvino.

The Valiants got one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Arias walked and junior Elias Tsouristakis (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) singled but was erased while trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Manchester scored a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings before blowing the game open with a five-spot in the top of the ninth inning to come away with the 10-2 victory and the doubleheader sweep over the Valiants.

Manhattanville (2-3) will wrap up its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. when they take on Penn State-Harrisburg on Monday morning at 9 a.m. before returning home later in the evening.
