Late Rally Sends #9 Kean Past Gwynedd-Mercy, 4-3

Union, N.J. (3/5/13) – Sophomore Anthony Fischetti lined a two out, two RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as the Kean University baseball team erased a 3-1 deficit by the final of 4-3 over Gwynedd-Mercy College.

With two outs, rookies Ryan Kelley and Ryan Reitmeyer worked back-to-back walks.  The Griffins (4-4) then lifted starter Andrew Schaefer for sophomore Jamey Minnemeyer.  Freshman Michael Kendall pulled a ball into the hole, reaching safely on the infield single.  Infielder James Lindsay attempted to get Kendall out at first and the errant throw allowed Kelley to score and Reitmeyer to move to third.  With one swing, Fischetti tied the game and gave Kean the lead for the first time this afternoon. 

Senior Kevin Herget entered in the ninth, recording a one-two-three inning for his first save of the season.  Sophomore southpaw Dan Hansen earned the win in relief.  Hansen (2-0) allowed just three hits in three and a third innings of shutout ball.  Minnemeyer (0-2) suffered the loss allowing two hits in a third of an inning.

Gwynedd-Mercy used single runs in the first, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead.  In the first, junior Dante Cassano lined a two out single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.  In the third it was Cassano again with a two out single through the left side to make it 2-0.  Junior John Burns increased the score to 3-0 in the fifth with a one out single to right.

The #7/9 Cougars (6-1) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth as rookie Salvatore Taormina lined an RBI single, scoring senior Nick Ramagli who reached on a leadoff single.

Offensively, Ramagli and Reitmeyer each had two hits for Kean.  For the Griffins, senior Josh Martin, sophomore Rick Elfreth and Cassano had multi-hit games.

The Cougars head to the road for the first time this season as they make their way to the west coast with games starting on Friday.
