Big Innings push Knights past Tomcats

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Neumann University baseball squad dealt the Tomcats an 8-1 loss Friday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Neumann (7-2) combined for 12 hits in the victory over Thiel (3-4). A four-run fourth followed up by a two-run fifth proved to be the difference for the Knights.

Matt Sheneman did the damage for Knights offense, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice fly, three RBIs and one run scored. Bobby McCormick went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Matt Spillman earned the victory, surrendering six hits and one earned run over six and a third innings.

The Tomcats managed seven hits on the day, with Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) finishing with a pair. Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler)'s RBI double, his third double of the season, manufactured the lone run for Thiel in the seventh. Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) suffered the loss and fell to 1-2 on the year, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in four and a third innings.

Thiel wraps up its spring break trip with a game against Dominican University Saturday, March 9. The nine-inning contest is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start at Terry Park.
