WPI Bounces Back To Split Season-Opening Doubleheader with Trine

Auburndale, FL --- WPI and Trine split their baseball double-header on Monday in Auburndale, Florida, with the Thunder taking game one, 26-11, and the Engineers coming from behind in game two, 9-5. WPI and Trine both open their seasons at 1-1. 

The first game saw sophomore right fielder John McGonagle (Medford, MA) went two-for-two with a three run blast over the wall. Senior catcher Shane Sampson (Worcester, MA) hit a two run homer in the bottom of the third, finishing with three RBI on the day. Junior left fielder David Trujillo (Sutton, MA) went two-for-three, scoring three runs with an RBI, while sophomore shortstop Steve Petry (Worcester, MA) homered and scored twice. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Portera (Alpharetta, GA) struck out three in two innings on the mound. 

In the second game, WPI was down 2-0 in the top of the fifth when the Crimson and Gray bats exploded for five runs, capped off with a two-RBI single by freshman first baseman Alex Venditti (Newton, MA). Venditti finished with three hits. Freshman centerfielder Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA) went two-for-four with three RBI. Freshman pitcher Mark Bentson (Brewster, NY) went six innings, allowing only one earned run with seven strikeouts.

WPI is right back at it Monday at 1pm, taking on Wittenberg (OH) in a twinbill.
