CAMDEN, N.J. – The Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden (4-2) exploded for 16 runs as the high-powered offense was too much to overcome for the City College of New York (0-4) and handed the Beavers a 16-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Campbell's Field.

The loss was charged to Dauris Tavarez (0-1) after the senior struck out four and allowed six earned runs in 3.0 innings (first start of the season). Quality pitching and a strong bullpen shut the door as southpaw Ryan Farabella (1-0) allowed just three runs – one earned – in 7.0 innings while the Scarlet Raptor bullpen struck out four in a perfect eighth and ninth.

The Beavers begin the home portion of their 2013 campaign tomorrow looking for their first win of the season as Plymouth State enters New York City. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m. at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York. Directions can be found here.

Designated hitter Victor Vargas went 1-for-2 from the plate with one run scored and Matt Montanez was 1-for-3 at the dish with one run scored.

Small ball was imminent for CCNY as Eric Quatrone and Jaquan Murphy recorded successful sacrifice bunts.

Rutgers-Camden did not waste time and scored two runs in the opening inning before posting a five-spot in the bottom of the third inning.

City College came around to score its first run in the fifth inning as Vargas and Anthony Colon began the top frame with back-to-back singles. After the Murphy sacrifice advanced both runners in scoring position, Quatrone grounded out to first base to plate Vargas as the score became 7-1.

With two outs, defensive miscues allowed CCNY to add two runs as catcher Mike Smith reached on a throwing error and Montanez singled to put runners on first and second. After a wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet, Vargas walked to load the bases. Colon came up to the plate and hit a chopper that was thrown wide of first base, allowing Smith and Montanez to come around and score.

The Scarlet Raptors put on a clinic in the bottom frame, scoring seven runs before adding two more in the eighth as CCNY fell 16-3.

Just a reminder, a fan van will leave from City College and head to Randall's Island Field 53 on Monday as the Beavers host the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 3:30 p.m.
