Claremont, Calif. - Senior right fielder Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and sophomore Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) threw a complete-game shutout as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team captured a 10-0 win over Whittier on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the win, he Sagehens improve to 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the SCIAC, while knocking Whittier (7-7, 5-2 SCIAC) out of sole possession of first place. The game also featured some highlight-reel defense in center field from senior Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.), who helped Bruml record his shutout with a stellar catch.

Pomona-Pitzer started the game off with a run in the bottom of the first inning, as senior outfielder Mike Moyer (Oakland, Calif.) led off with a single and went to second on a single from Gentili. Bruml hit a long fly ball to center field to advance Moyer to third, and freshman first baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) followed with a long fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly.

After Bruml retired the side in order in the first two innings, Whittier appeared on its way to tying the game, before Munzer took away a sure run and turned it into a double play. With Josh Genzuk on first after a single and nobody out, Cody Martinez hit a bullet into the right-center field gap that seemed destined to get to the wall and tie the game at 1-1.

With the ball tailing away from him and seemingly no chance to make the play, Munzer covered almost 100 feet on a dead sprint, laid himself out parallel to the ground, traveled another 10 feet in the air, and picked the ball off the grasstops with his glove hand at full extension, just before his crash landing to the ground. Genzuk was already to third base expecting to score, and after Munzer got back to his feet and threw the ball back into the infield, Pomona-Pitzer was able to casually stroll to first base to get the double play.

With momentum back on their side, the Sagehens took advantage of a pair of Whittier errors to score a second run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Gentili came up and tomahawked a high pitch well over the wall in right field to make the score 5-0.

Junior catcher Coleman Lukas (Berkeley ,Calif.) added an RBI on a bases-loaded walk, Munzer tacked on an RBI single, and Rosenbaum ended the game with a two-run double to right-center in the seventh to enforce the 10-run rule.

Bruml allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked one to get the shutout and improve to 3-1 the year. Gentili was the only player for either team with more than one hit, while Rosenbaum matched him with three RBI. Eight of nine Sagehen starters had a hit, while Lukas was 0-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Whittier tomorrow at 11 a.m.
