FOREST GROVE – A rash of defensive miscues and a lack of offense spelled trouble for Pacific Saturday as the Boxers dropped both ends of their Northwest Conference doubleheader with George Fox in baseball action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The Boxers managed just two hits off of the Bruins' Clay Gartner in the opener while George Fox parlayed two errors into the winning run in the third inning for a 2-0 victory.  Pacific then committed five errors in the night, including three in a four-run fourth inning that allowed George Fox to break open the game and roll to a 14-4 win.

The losses left the Boxers still looking for their first win of the season as they dropped to 0-10, 0-5 NWC.  George Fox improved to 12-4, 5-0 NWC.

GAME 1: GEORGE FOX 2, PACIFIC 0
George Fox starter Clay Gartner got the best of an opening-game pitcher's duel, allowing the Boxers just two hits in a complete game shutout.  Pacific advanced just two runners past first base, stranding five.

Pacific had their only hits in the first inning.  With two out, Walker Olis (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) singled to left and advanced to second when Logan Moen (Sr., Brier, Wash.) singled through the left side, but Gartner struck out Donnie Bradley (So., Beaverton, Ore.) to end the threat.  Only three other Pacific batters reached base the rest of the game, two on walks and one by way of a hit by pitch.

The Bruins scored their first run in a third inning that saw George Fox load the bases with three bunts and two Pacific errors.  Zach Hegelmeyer and Emmett Ackerlund both laid down bunts to open the inning and both reached safely on Boxers' miscues.  Matthew Zeller loaded the bases with a third bunt that rolled fair down the left field line.  Zach Miller followed with a fielder's choice that scored Heggelmeyer in the only run the Bruins scored in the frame.

George Fox had runners on first and second with out in both the fourth and sixth innings, but in both instances pitcher Rob Dittrick (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) made a heads-up play to get the lead runner going to third base and end the scoring threat.

The Bruins scored a seventh inning insurance run when Hegelmeyer was hit by a pitch and scored two batters later when Zeller singled through the left side.

Gartner improved to 3-0 on the season with a gem, allowing just the two hits and two walks while striking out 11.  Dittrick dropped to 0-2 on the season in his first complete game effort of the year, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  Josh Rapacz went 3 for 4 to lead George Fox offensively.

GAME 2: GEORGE FOX 14, PACIFIC 4
Pacific and George Fox used errors to score single runs in the second inning.  In the top of the frame, Derek Dixon reached with one out on an error and scored on Tim Williams' triple to left center field that flew all the way to the wall.  Austin Gallagher (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) doubled with one out in the home half of the second and scored when Nick Tasaka (Sr., Hawaii Kai, Hawaii) reached on an error.

After scoring a single run in the third, the Bruins broke the game open in a four-run fourth that saw the Boxers commit three errors.  With one out, Zac Israel singled up the middle while Hegelmeyer and Ackerlund both reached on errors to load the bases.  Israel scored the opening run when Zeller lined out, but the throw to try and double up Ackerlund at second went wide of the bag.  Miller, Rapacz and Clifford all added RBI singles to hang the four unearned runs on the board.

The Bruins added one in the top of the seventh before the Boxers' bats finally came alive for three in the home half of the frame.  With one out, pinch hitter Nick Garrett (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) singled and was advanced to second on Grant Rogers' (So., Clackamas, Ore.) sacrifice bunt.  Charlie Gaff (Stockton, Calif.) followed with a single to score Garrett before Trux French (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.) roped a single through the left side to score Gaff and Michael Arakaki (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii).

George Fox put the game away with an explosive five-run eighth.  Zeller walked to open the frame and Miller reached on an error before Rapacz followed with a single to right that scored Zeller.  Clifford then singled to plate Miller.  Dixon's single loaded the bases and Williams took advantage with a two-run single that rolled up the left side.  Hegelmeyer brought home the fifth run of the frame on a fielder's choice.  The Bruins played add-on in the ninth, scoring two more on a single by Dixon.

Connor Harris improved to 4-0 on the season for the Bruins with the win on the mound, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.  Kyle Treadway (So., Phoenix, Ore.) took his fourth loss of the season for the Boxers, allowing six runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts in six innings of work.  Gaff went 2 for 3 with a run and a RBI to lead the Boxers.  Clifford paced George Fox with a 3 for 4 game, including three RBIs and two runs.

The two teams will conclude their three-game NWC series on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.  A live video webcast of the game will be available at goboxers.com.
