Good Pitching Suffers Tough Lough in Home Openers

YAPHANK, N.Y. – Strong pitching by Plymouth State (2-0) allowed the Panthers to begin the 2013 season with two victories as the City College of New York (0-6) fell in its home openers, 13-1 in game one and 5-1 in game two at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank on Sunday despite Felice Martino's strong pitching performance and Eric Quatrone's 3-for-6 from the plate.

Martino (0-1) shined in game two and struck out four in 6.0 innings but was charged with the first loss of his Beaver career. The Panthers pitching staff allowed just two runs and struck out 24 hitters in two seven-inning games. Quatrone recorded three base knocks, picking up a double in game one and a triple in game two and Matt Sola-Baker picked up a triple in the second game as well.

Game One

Quatrone went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, Jaquan Murphy went 1-for-2 with a bunt single and Anthony Colon went 1-for-3 with one run scored but the potent Panther offense put up eight runs in the sixth inning to run away with game one, 13-1. Mike Smith walked twice and Emmanuel Nwokelo registered a pinch hit single in the loss.

Andrew Mulvey (0-2) picked up his second loss of the season after allowing eight runs – five earned – in 5.1 innings. After Plymouth scored four runs in the second inning, Mulvey buckled down and pitched three scoreless innings after doing the same to begin the contest. Rew Wilson (1-0) was credited with the win after striking out five and allowing just two hits in 4.0 innings.

Plymouth struck first, scoring four runs in the second inning before CCNY came across the plate for its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Colon doubled with one out before scoring on a Quatrone double.

However, things went sour quickly as defensive miscues and the wind played a factor in Plymouth scoring eight runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to take game one, 13-1.

Game Two

Martino allowed just four runs in 6.0 innings and threw a season-high 116 pitches but CCNY could not string a rally together as the Beavers fell 5-1 in the latter game on Sunday.

Plymouth began the second game with one run in the first inning and added two in the fifth as Martino continued to make quality pitches.

Quatrone hit a one-out triple to right-center field before Kennedy Tavarez plated the speedster on a sacrifice fly. The Panthers added two runs in the sixth and seventh to run away with a 5-1 victory.

Martino picked up the loss while Jeff Runnals (1-0) was credited with the win after 4.0 shutout innings (six strikeouts).

CCNY continues its home stand and hosts the United States Merchant Marine Academy tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Note: Today's lineups were the fifth and sixth different batting orders used this season by second-year head coach Steve Macias… Eric Quatrone and Matt Sola-Baker's triples in the second contest marked the first time this season that two Beavers register a triple.
