SANFORD, Fla. – Senior lefty Jarrett Gish (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast) threw seven shutout frames aided by three inning-ending double plays, and a nine-run explosion in the top of the eighth propelled the Case Western Reserve University baseball team to a 12-0 victory versus the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship on Monday morning at Sanford Memorial Stadium.

The Spartans (4-1, 2-0 UAA), in the midst of eight games in seven days in the Sunshine State, face their lone doubleheader of the week tomorrow versus Brandeis University (Mass.) at 11:00 a.m. and Washington University-St. Louis at 2:00 p.m.

The game was stopped after eight innings due to the Association's 10-run "mercy rule."

With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Association.

Playing in his home state, Gish (1-0) allowed just seven base hits, all singles, while walking three and striking out a pair.

After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, the Spartans broke through in the second on a two-run double by senior shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge). Sophomore designated hitter William Meador (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and sophomore left fielder Kerrigan Cain (Hartville, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) each scored on the play after reaching via singles.

Gish retired the Yellowjackets on double-play balls in each of the first two innings, the latter of which ended a bases-loaded threat for U of R. The Yellowjackets then went in order in the third before Gish worked more double-play magic to end the fourth.

Case tacked on a single tally in the top of the seventh as freshman infielder Mike Ilacqua (Mayfield Village, Ohio/University School) led off with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore right fielder Andrew Gronski (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson).

Then with the score at 3-0, the Spartans put the game away with nine runs on five hits, three walks and a costly Rochester error with the bases loaded. The big hit of the inning came off of the bat of senior first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, Md./Bullis School), who launched his first homerun of the season, a three-run shot, over the left field fence.

For the game, senior center fielder Paul Pakan (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge), Cain, Ilacqua and Meador each pounded out two hits, while Keen and Ossola tied for team-high honors with three RBI apiece.

Rochester's Corey King (0-1) was the tough-luck loser, allowing just three runs on eight hits in seven innings while striking out four. Josh Ludwig and Brendan Garry led the Yellowjackets at the plate with 2-for-3 performances.
