Gallaudet Sweeps Westfield State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Gallaudet University swept the Westfield State University baseball team (17-3, 5-4) in a double header on Monday, March 18 at Lake Myrtle Park.

Westfield finishes its Florida trip with a 3-6 record after winning its first three games. Gallaudet is 5-10.

In the opener, Gallaudet scored two runs in both the first and second innings and knocked Owl starter Mike Molta out of the game with a seven-run outburst in the fourth frame. Westfield scored its three runs in the seventh and final inning.

The Owls were outhit, 15-6. Tim Santilli smacked a pinch hit RBI double and Pat McWilliams had an RBI single.

In the nightcap, Westfield dropped a tough one-run decision. Westfield scored two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead on a bases loaded walk by Dan Rokitowski and Shane Lynch's sacrifice fly.

Gallaudet tied the score with a run in the home half of the third. The Washington, D.C. school scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-2 lead, including a two-run double down the third base line on a questionable fair ball call by the home plate umpire.

Westfield rallied for two runs in the sixth but left the bases loaded. Nick Champeau ripped a double down the left field line and pinch hitter Mike Ferrelli drew a one-out walk. Joe Alibrandi singled to load the bases then pinch hitter Mike Molta flied out to center field for the second out. D.J. Bishop singled thru the left side of the infield to drive in a run and make the score 5-3. Rokitowski drew his second bases loaded walk of the game on a 3-2 pitch to make the score 5-4. Lynch then struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.

In the Owls' final at bat, pinch hitter Tim Santilli rapped a two-out single then pinch runner Tyler Adams was caught stealing on a close play at second base to end the game.

Westfield was outhit 7-6. Alibrandi was 2 for 2 and Rokitowski had two RBI on his two walks with the sacks full.

Peter Cassidy was the losing pitcher. He walked three and struck out two in five innings.
