Hornet Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Loss to Guilford

GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College baseball team used the long ball to rally against Guilford College on Tuesday, ultimately falling 7-5 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

Guilford took a commanding 4-0 lead in the first inning on three hits. The Quakers took advantage of three walks in the frame as two came around to score.

Lynchburg put its first run on the board in the second inning as senior Brock Shiflett led off with a walk. Following a steal of second base, sophomore Joe Rogers drove him home on a single to left-center field.

The Quakers came out strong in the third inning as Kent Peterson singled and John Macon Smith walked to put the first two runners on. The Hornets brought sophomore Trevor Johnston in from the bullpen to limit the damage and get out of the frame. Peterson and Smith crossed in the inning, closing the book on Lynchburg starting pitcher, junior James Womack, as Johnston would not allow another run until the seventh inning.

The Hornets were down 6-1 in the sixth inning when the offense started to put a dent in the Guilford lead.

Sophomore Lincoln Evans led off the sixth with a walk in front of starting shortstop Michael Kenah. The senior, Kenah drove the ball to deep left-center field and out for his second home run of the season, cutting the deficit to three, 6-3.

Following the run charged to Johnston in the seventh inning, Lynchburg was down four runs heading into the eighth inning. Kenah led off the inning with a double to right-center and an out later Shiflett launched a ball over the right field wall, cutting the lead to 7-5 on his third homer of the 2013 campaign.

Johnston pitched five innings of one-run ball for the Hornets, striking out two and scattering four hits. Kenah and Rogers each had two hits while the former added a pair of RBI to go with a pair of RBI from Shiflett.

Smith and Nathan Fulbright combined for five RBI for Guilford (11-11/4-5).

Lynchburg (11-9/4-4) travels to Averett University for a non-conference matchup Wednesday at 2:30 pm.
