No. 5-ranked St. Thomas used defense and timely hitting to come away with a 3-2, 4-3 baseball sweep of Dubuque in Tuesday afternoon play in the Metrodome.
The Tommies (7-3) had no errors on the day. Six Tommie pitchers issued just one walk to help pull out the close wins.
J.D. Dorgan's two-run homer in the fourth inning of game one erased a 1-1 tie. Mark Dominik and Steve Maher were credited with three scoreless innings in relief to give starter Zach Franz the victory.
UST broke to a 4-0 lead in game two then held off a late rally for the Spartans (0-6). Freshman Eric Veglahn took the win with four scoreless innings in his first collegiate appearance. Dylan Thomas came on for the last inning with a 4-1 lead but allowed three singles to trim the margin to 4-2. Thomas got a strikeout, a sac fly and a ground out to freeze the tying run at first base and claim the save.
In game two, Ben Podobinski went 3-for-4 with two RBI hits; Ryan Gerber had a solo homer; and Thomas added an RBI double. Veglahn struck out three and allowed just three hits.
Spencer Kuehn and Chris Briggs each had two hits to pace Dubuque's nine-hit attack in game two.
The Tommies face No. 20-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Saturday to open an eight-game trip to Winter Haven, Fla.
