Trinity Baseball Pounds Hamilton In Opener, Settles For Doubleheader Split

Auburndale, Fla. - Sophomore 3B Kyle Decker (Simsbury, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 14-1 victory over the Hamilton College Continentals in RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational action this afternono at Lake Myrtle Park. Trinity, which lost the second game of the doubleheader, 3-2, is now 6-5. Hamilton moves to 4-2.

Leading, 2-0, after a sacrifice flies by senior OF Marc Crowley (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore 1B Brian Wolfe (La Habra Heights, Calif.) in the second inning, Trinity erupted for 10 runs in the fifth frame to put the first game away early. Senior OF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) led off with a double, senior captain OF Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.) singled, and senior captain SS Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) follwed with a three-run homer to right field to start the onslaught.

Senior captain Dh Joe Papa (Stoneham, Mass.), senior 2B Bryan Ginsberg (Westwood, Mass.), and sophomore C Robert Ferrara (Fairfield, Conn.) each had two hits for Trinity, with Ferrara contributing two doubles and two runs. Bantam reshman RHP John Meuchner (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) posted his first career win with just a single hit allowed and nine strikeouts over five innings.

In the nightcap, Continental starter Cole Dreyfuss allowed two hits and two runs and offset five walks with 5 K's, and Tom Moriarty saved it for Hamilton in the seventh inning. Trinity sophomore DH Scott Huley (Greenwich, Conn.) drove in the game's first run on an RBI single in the second frame and later scored on a ground ball by classmate Carson Kenney (Kensington, Md.). Hamilton answered with three runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-out, two-run single by Steven LaRochelle.

Bantam junior RHP Ryan Carr (Cos Cob, Conn.) turned in a heroic relief effort with three hits allowed and four strikeouts over 3.2 innings, and rookie righty Dylan Callahan (Greenwich, Conn.) added a scoreless seventh to set the Bantams up for a last chance to tie in their last at-bats. Crowley managed an infield hit with two outs, and stole second base tp put the tying run in scoring position with Almeida at the plate, but Hamilton LF Gabe Klein robbed Almeida of an extra-base hit at the left field wall. The ball came out when Klein appeared to hit the wall, but the umpires ruled it a catch.
