The Augsburg College Auggies swept the Yellowjackets for the second time this season, winning both games in the day's doubleheader in Tucson, Ariz. A seven-run third inning was too much for the Yellowjackets to handle in the first game and a resilient effort gave the Auggies a come-from-behind win in the nightcap.

Yellowjacket freshman Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) got his first collegiate start and seemed to be in control until the Auggies' bats came alive in the third inning. Already trailing by a run, the Auggies took advantage of a Yellowjacket error, walk and hit batsmen to deliver back-to-back two-run singles by Ryan Sward and Gary Mariscal. The Auggies would tack on three more runs and eventually run Lewis out of the game with a six-run lead, 7-1.

The Yellowjackets would attempt to overcome the Auggies big inning by chipping away and scoring a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids), Jeff Miller (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) and Casey Dittel (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) would all receive RBIs.

Augsburg would not be able to extend their lead off of reliever Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East), who finished the game for the Yellowjackets by throwing a three-and-a-third scoreless innings.

Auggie starter Eren Curr made little work of the Yellowjackets in the top of the seventh securing his complete game win.

The Yellowjackets collected eight hits in the game, led by seniors Robbie Veith (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and Miller who had two each. Lewis received the loss, giving up seven earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.

The Yellowjackets tried to set an early tone in the second game, hoping to avoid the season sweep at the hands of the Auggies. The Yellowjackets turned to junior Travis Elwood (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka), who would get the start on the mound.

TJ Evanson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and Miller would reach base off of Auggie starter Tyler Beck, the second time Beck has faced the Yellowjackets this season. Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) would each deliver RBI singles to give the Yellowjackets an early 2-0 lead.

Elwood and Beck would settle in, putting zeros on the scoreboard until the Auggies struck back in the sixth.

Scott Livermore would hit a sharp single to start the Auggie rally and Louie LaChapelle would draw a walk from Elwood bringing his day to an end. Dan Genrich (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) would be called on in relief and after the Auggies completed a successful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, Zach Pavlisick and Brent Kolboew would each deliver RBI base hits to tie the game.

After Fairbanks and Vold reached base, it looked like the Yellowjackets would respond to the Auggies scoring but Beck would wiggle his way out of the jam allowing no damage to be done.

Ryan Sward led off the seventh for the Auggies and smashed a fastball from Genrich to deep center field for a triple. Adam Carl would hit a sacrifice fly to give the Auggies their first lead in the game.

The Yellowjackets were retired by Beck in the seventh after a leadoff double from Veith. Beck completed the game securing an Auggie win and a season sweep of the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (4-7, 0-0 WIAC) will be back in action on Thursday, March 21 with a single game against Gustavus Adolphus College. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. MDT at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz. Alex Beers (Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) is tentatively scheduled to start.
