Thomas More Falls, 10-6, to Thiel in PAC Opener

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team fell, 10-6, to Thiel College today (Friday, March 22, 2013) in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and home opener at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the PAC and the Tomcats improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.

Thiel scored two in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the eighth, while holding Thomas More to one in the fourth and five in the seventh for the 10-6 victory.

Thomas More had two players with multiple hits in the game as freshman first baseman Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) was two-for-four with a run batted-in and sophomore catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) was two-for-four with a two doubles and a run scored.  Senior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was one-for-five with a double and three RBI.

On the mound, senior pitcher Mike Hager (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) suffered the loss as he started and pitched five innings giving up six runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking one.  Senior pitcher Grant Lewis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) pitched two and one-third innings of relief and gave up four runs on five hits and struck out two and senior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched one and two-third scoreless innings of relief and gave up only two hits, while striking out two.

The two teams will close out the three-game PAC series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Thomas More Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
