Providence, R.I.- Senior left fielder Chris Stanley (Placentia, CA) went 5-for-7 with two doubles, a homer, five RBI and two runs scored, while senior right fielder Mike Cunningham (Syosset, NY) finished 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI, a stolen base and four runs scored, as Suffolk University swept a doubleheader (3-2, 9-3) from Rhode Island College at Anchorman Field in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams improve to 9-1 overall after picking up a pair of victories and extends its winning to nine consecutive games. Rhode Island College falls to 1-11 with the loss. The game was originally slated to be played at Suffolk, but because of unplayable field conditions, the twinbill was moved to Providence with the Rams serving as the home team.

In game one, the Anchormen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore right fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI) plated senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) with an RBI fielder's choice, this after Hubbard led off the frame with a single to center field.

The Rams bounced back to tie the game at one in the bottom of the second when junior third baseman Mike Muse (Milton, MA) knocked in Cunningham with an RBI single to left field. Cunningham reached on a leadoff single and then moved into scoring position following a RIC error.

Yet, RIC immediately responded in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead after Hubbard led off the inning with a double to right field and eventually came around to score on an RBI double from Grasso.

With the Rams threatening in the bottom of the fourth, RIC sophomore starting pitcher Stephen Lapatin (Cranston, RI) withstood a line drive off the knee and closed out the inning to keep Suffolk off the scoreboard for the time being. Lapatin was stellar through four innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and one walk, while striking out five in the no decision.

Sophomore relief pitcher Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) replaced Lapatin and quickly retired the Rams in order to close out the bottom of the fifth. However, Cummiskey ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth when junior first baseman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, MA) opened the frame with a leadoff single. Moments later, Cunningham stepped in and launched a towering shot over the right-center field fence to give Suffolk a 3-2 lead.

After the Anchormen put a runner in scoring position with one out in the top of the seventh inning, sophomore relief pitcher Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, MA) came out of the bullpen and quickly sat down the final two batters to close out the game and pick up his second save of the season.

Junior left-hander Jonathan Richard (North Reading, MA) earned the win (3-0) for Suffolk after scattering two runs on six hits and one walk in 6.1 innings of work.

Cummiskey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after conceding two runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

In game two, the red-hot Rams immediately opened the action with a scoring barrage to take a 6-0 lead after just one inning of play. Suffolk's first seven batters reached in the inning, while the onslaught was highlighted by a two-run single from Stanley and a two-run double from sophomore catcher J.C. Collette (Amesbury, MA).

After the Rams plated two more in the bottom of the second to take an 8-0 lead, the Anchormen finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Hubbard scored on an RBI single from Grasso. However, Suffolk increased its lead to eight runs after the Rams scored another in the bottom half of the frame to make it, 8-1.

Both teams fell silent at the plate until the top of the sixth, when RIC tacked on two more to cut the deficit to six. Senior right fielder Kyle Mann (West Warwick, RI) drove in freshman catcher Matt Billington (Cumberland, RI) with an RBI single, while freshman first baseman Andreas Brackett (Woonsocket, RI) scored later in the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from sophomore second baseman Mario Albunia (Jersey City, NJ).

Suffolk lefthander Joe Saia (Everett, MA) surrendered just three runs on seven hits and two walks to earn the win (2-0). The southpaw struck out five, while sophomore reliever Eli Libby (Sudbury, MA) fanned two batters and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Senior left-hander Kyle Florio (Plantsville, CT) was outstanding for RIC as he scattered just three hits and one walk in three shutout innings. Senior right-hander Mike Farias (West Greenwich, RI) was tagged with the loss (1-2).

Grasso paced the Anchormen at the dish with a 3-for-7 performance that included a double, a stolen base and three RBI. Hubbard finished 3-for-8 with a double and three runs scored, while Mann went 2-for-6 with an RBI for Rhode Island College.

Aside from monster performances from both Stanley and Cunningham, Suffolk was led by Cintolo, who went 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Muse finished 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI, while sophomore shortstop Justin Knight (Great Meadows, NJ) chipped in with three hits as well.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host a doubleheader against Bridgewater State on Sunday, March 24 (1 p.m.) at Anchorman Field.
