Hamilton baseball splits doubleheader with Carroll

Hamilton College's Tyler Reinhold '15 racked up six hits, including three doubles, and the Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader with Carroll University at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla., on March 24.

The Continentals (5-5 overall) dropped a wild first game, 14-12, and rallied for a 3-2 win in Game 2. The teams square off one more time on Tuesday, March 26. Hamilton plays a non-conference doubleheader against NESCAC East Division foe Colby College on Monday, March 25.

Hamilton trailed 2-0 after two innings in the nightcap, but the Continentals scored a run in the third and two in the fourth, and held on for the win. JJay Lane '15 pitched his second complete game this season. Lane allowed one earned run and struck out five batters. He has a 0.66 earned run average and 10 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.

Reinhold was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a double. Zack Becker '16 went 2-for-2 with a double and a run batted in. Ben Goffin '15 had a two-run single and Tim Burke '16 collected two hits.

Carl Formento tossed a complete game for Carroll (3-3) in the loss. Matt Francois had two hits and Tyler Schovanec had an RBI single.

Cody Smith led off the top of the first inning with a single up the middle for the Pioneers. An error moved Smith to second base as Jordan Stephans reached first safely. Schovanec followed with a single up the middle to score Smith for a 1-0 lead.

Carroll added another run in the top of the second. Francois led off the inning with a single, and a walk to Mitch Marty put runners on first and second. Alex Hallenbeck's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base and Phil Giuffre drove in Francois with a single through the left side.

Hamilton got one run back in the bottom of the third. Reinhold led off with a double to right field. Brian Ferrell '16 laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Reinhold to third and wound up safe at first on an error by Ben Turner. Becker smashed a one-out double down the right field line that plated Reinhold, but a perfect relay throw beat Ferrell to the plate, and the Continentals were unable to tie the score.

The Continentals jumped on top with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. A single to right field by Burke and a bunt single by Joe Jensen '15 put two runners on base. Taylor moved them over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, and Ben Goffin '15 drove in both with a single to center. Reinhold followed with a single and the Continentals had two runners on with only one out, but Formento retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Lane settled down after the first two innings and retired 10 straight batters. Lane finally gave up another hit with one out in the sixth, a single to Turner, but got out of the inning with a pickoff and a ground ball to Becker.

Hamilton threatened to add an insurance run in the sixth after two-out singles by Reinhold and Ferrell. But Formento got Gabe Klein '13 to ground out to second and kept it a one-run game.

Lane came back out for the seventh inning and gave up singles to Francois and Marty. Hallenbeck moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt and the tying run was 90 feet away with only one out. After Smith struck out and Giuffre walked, Lane got Stephans to pop out to first and end the game.

In the opener, Carroll scored five times in the fifth inning and held on to win 14-12 in a wild game. Zach Wiseman allowed just one run over the final three innings in relief to pick up the win. Schovanec and Giuffre had two hits apiece, including one double. Schovanec scored two runs and drove in one, and Giuffre finished with two RBI. Joe Klobukowski and Hallenbeck had two hits and scored two runs apiece, and Klobukowski added an RBI.

Ferrell and Reinhold led the Hamilton offense in Game 1. Ferrell recorded a single, double, four RBI and two runs scored. Reinhold had three hits, including two doubles, scored three runs and drove in one. Sam Fuentes '13, Klein, Becker and Jensen all collected two hits. Jensen and Burke chipped in two RBI apiece. Relief pitcher Tommy Moriarty '14 made his seventh appearance this year and tossed scoreless fifth and sixth innings.

Hamilton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Becker hit his fourth double this season and came around to score. Carroll responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-1 advantage.

The Pioneers' first eight batters reached base safely on seven singles and an error. Klobukowski led off with a single to right field and advanced to third while Turner wound up on second after an error. Stephans singled in both runners for a 2-1 lead.

After Stephans stole second, Schovanec singled through the right side. With runners at the corners, Schovanec stole second on a pickoff attempt, and Stephans beat the throw to the plate for the third run. Dylan Grove got on base with an infield single, and a single by Giuffre drove in Schovanec for a 4-1 lead.

Following a wild pitch that moved the runners to second and third, Eric Keenan plated Grove with a single to right, and Fuentes threw out Giuffre at home. Keenan later scored the sixth run on an error.

Carroll added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Marty was hit by a pitch with two outs, and back-to-back singles by Hallenbeck and Klobukowski scored Marty and pushed Hallenbeck to third. Klobukowski stole second base and a throwing error allowed Hallenbeck to score for an 8-1 lead.

The Hamilton bats woke up to the tune of six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Tyler Roberts quickly retired the first two batters, but the next nine Continentals all reached base. Nick Taylor '15 was hit by a pitch and Steve LaRochelle '14 walked to put runners on first and second. Reinhold's double down the left field line drove in Taylor, and Ferrell's single made it 8-4. Consecutive singles by Klein and Becker plated Ferrell and knocked Roberts out of the game.

Fuentes drew a walk that loaded the bases, and Burke walked and forced in Klein. Jensen's infield single allowed Becker to score and pulled Hamilton within 8-7. The Continentals left the bases loaded.

Carroll tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth. Stephans reached on a fielder's choice and a walk to Grove moved him to second. Giuffre smacked a shot down the left field line that brought in Stephans for a 9-7 lead.

Hamilton grabbed an 11-9 advantage after the Continentals scored four runs in the top half of the fifth inning. LaRochelle started the inning by getting hit by a pitch and scored on Reinhold's single up the middle after Hallenbeck couldn't handle the play, which also allowed Reinhold to get to second. Ferrell hammered an RBI double to left center and singles by Klein and Fuentes loaded the bases once again. Burke's sacrifice fly plated Ferrell and Klein scored on Jensen's single through the left side.

The Pioneers took the lead right back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Carroll loaded the bases with no outs as Marty reached on an error, Hallenbeck singled and Klobukowski walked. Turner drew a walk, which allowed Marty to score, and an infield error cleared the bases. Stephen advanced to second on the error and later scored on Schovanec's double for an 14-11 advantage.

The Continentals pulled within 14-12 on a run in the sixth. Reinhold doubled with one out, went to third on a wild pitch and Ferrell knocked him in with a sacrifice fly. Carroll threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs on a walk and two hit batsmen. Moriarty got out of the jam by striking out Schovanec.

In the top of the seventh, Hamilton had the tying run at first after Jensen drew a two-out walk. But Wiseman got a ground ball to first base for the final out.
