Ohio Northern ices Albion in extra Innings

ALBION, Mich. – The Albion College baseball team had chances to extend its winning streak to five games Tuesday, but it stranded 14 runners and failed to execute a squeeze bunt in the eighth inning in a 13-6 loss to Ohio Northern University in 10 innings.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was not started because the game went 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Albion was down to its final out trailing 6-4 in the seventh when five Britons reached base. Tony Cappelletty and Brendan Diamond produced RBI singles to send the game to extra innings.

Davin Montgomery led off Albion's eighth inning with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and was tagged on trying to score on a bunt.

Michael Fischbach, who allowed one run in 3.1 innings of relief on the mound, was lifted after retiring Ohio Northern's first batter in the 10th. Seven Polar Bear batters reached base with two out as they rallied for seven runs.

Montgomery collected four of Albion's 16 hits in the game. Brendan Diamond, Adam Mazza, Eric Shimmel and Troy Bodtke all collected two hits for Albion.

Albion returns to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at 2 p.m. Friday when it hosts Trine University for a doubleheader at Frank Joranko Field.
