WEBSTER, N.Y. – Junior starting pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and senior starting pitcher Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) each had a brilliant outing on Friday to earn a pair of wins for the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (5-11, 2-3 SUNYAC) over The College at Brockport (10-7, 1-4 SUNYAC) in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Webster Turf Field. The Hawks took a 9-1 victory in the opener, and then grabbed a 3-1 win in the finale.

Grann earned his second win of the season after tossing 8.2 innings and allowing just one earned run, which came in the ninth inning. He struck out seven batters in the process and allowed just four hits. Chismar followed with a seven-inning complete-game gem in which he too struck out seven batters and allowed just one run.

Having a big day at the plate was senior catcher Matt Kaldon (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central), who batted 6-for-8 across both games, hitting a triple, scoring two runs and knocking in another.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Hawks kicked off the scoring in game one with a pair of runs in the third. Senior left fielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) stroked a two-out single to right, scoring senior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and sophomore right fielder Richard Guido(Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) to give the Hawks a 2-0 edge.

The Hawks added to their lead in the fourth with another two-out rally. After singles by Kaldon and junior shortstopSteven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack), junior second baseman Kenny Gentile (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) singled to right to knock in Kaldon from second. Carr followed with another base hit to right, bringing both Morse and Gentile around to score and push the Hawk advantage to 5-0.

In the fifth, the Hawks picked up where they left off in the fourth. With two outs and runners on second and third, freshman designated hitter Matt Dixon (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) singled up the middle to clear the bases and leave New Paltz with a 7-0 lead after five.

Two more runs in the sixth gave the Hawks their fourth-straight scoring inning. Once again with two outs, the Hawks had two runners on for senior third baseman Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), who rocked a triple to deep right to give New Paltz their eighth and ninth runs of the opener.

After yielding just two hits through the first eight frames, Grann ran into trouble in the ninth. Brockport shortstop Jake Coleman led off the inning with a double, and was then knocked in by center fielder Kyle Tracy on a single to give the Golden Eagles their first run of the game. Grann then recorded two straight outs, but a walk forced head coach Matt Griffiths to turn to senior pitcher Michael Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) to close out the inning. Pinnola got the next batter to ground out to first to wrap up the victory for the Hawks.

Starter Travis Zenwick took the loss for Brockport, allowing seven runs on 11 hits over 4.2 innings.

Repetto went 3-for-4 in the opener win scoring a pair of runs and picking up a pair of RBI. Prescia went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run, while Dixon batted 2-for-4 with another two RBI.

Game two got off to a slower start than game one, as neither team put a run across in the first four innings. New Paltz opened the scoring in the top of the fifth, however, as Gentile singled in Kaldon to give the Hawks the first lead of the contest. Brockport answered in its next at bat when Coleman's base hit to right plated left fielder Mike Gianni to tie the ballgame.

It did not take long for the Hawks to take the lead back, as they scored a pair of runs in the next inning. With runners on the corners, senior first baseman Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) hit a fly ball to center field, far enough to allowed Repetto to score from third and give the Hawks the lead. Kaldon added another run with a two-out single to center that scored Prescia from second to close out the inning with a 3-1 advantage.

With the lead, Chismar threw the last two innings without allowing a baserunner to secure the 3-1 decision for the Hawks.

James Bardenett went the complete seven innings for Brockport, shouldering the loss after allowing three runs on 11 hits.

Kaldon led the Hawks, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run score. Gentile picked up an RBI in a 1-for-3 effort, while Prescia and Guido each had two hits in the nightcap.

The Hawks and Golden Eagles close out their three-game series tomorrow, March 30, in Brockport, N.Y. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
