For immediate release – 3/30/2013 - #327 Defense Plays a Key in Doubleheader Sweep of EMULYNCHBURG, VA –The Lynchburg College baseball team used key defensive plays by freshman Drew Taylor and sophomore Lincoln Evans in game two for a 5-3 win after pitching dominated game one in a 7-1 victory Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.Lynchburg controlled game one from the onset, scoring two runs in the second inning as Joe Rogers led off with a triple to right field. Jay Kenyon followed it up with a single to plate the first run of the game on the board. Following an error that put Dustin Arrowood on base and a sacrifice by Taylor, Kenyon was able to come home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Tanner.LC got two more runs in the fourth as Kenyon singled to left field to lead off the inning. An out later, Taylor collected his first collegiate hit, a triple to right field that scored Kenyon. Evans singled in Taylor before the Royals could get out of the inning.The Hornets added two more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth in support of Martin Henderlite, who allowed three hits while striking out six over seven innings of scoreless work.Game two came down to very important defensive plays as the Hornets and Royals were tied at three heading to the fourth inning. EMU had runners on the corners with one out when a Royal batter was called for batter interference. Ryan McAlister tried to make up for the previous play, but his line drive to left-center was snagged by Taylor, diving headlong to come up with the third out and save two runs.LC picked up a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings before EMU tried to rally in the seventh. The Royals (13-12/3-5) had two runners on down 5-3 when Kyle Armstrong sent a liner into right field. Evans came up with it on one hop and gunned the runner trying to score at the plate to preserve the two run lead.Michael Kenah had four hits and three RBI for the Hornets on the day while Taylor and Evans each contributed three hits.Lynchburg (16-11/6-5) returns home Tuesday afternoon as the Hornets face Hampden-Sydney College (13-13-1/6-5) in a 3 p.m. start.
