BROCKPORT, N.Y. – A four-run rally in the top of the 12th inning fueled the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (6-11, 3-3 SUNYAC) to an 8-4 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over The College at Brockport (10-8, 1-5 SUNYAC) on Saturday. The win completes the weekend sweep for the Hawks.

Junior second baseman Kenny Gentile (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led off the 12th with a single through the left side. Senior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) moved him up to second with a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore right fielder Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) then singled through the right side, and the right fielder made an error allowing Gentile to score and Guido to advance to second.

With runners on second and third and two away, senior first baseman Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) doubled to right center to bring home another two runs. Freshman designated hitter Matt Dixon (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) followed with a single to plate Pinnola and give the Hawks the 8-4 lead.

Sophomore relief pitcher Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) picked up the win with three scoreless innings in relief. Brockport reliever Justin McCarthy shouldered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.

The Hawks got on the board first on Saturday, taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With runners on the corners, senior catcher Matt Kaldon (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) brought in senior third baseman Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) from third base on a sacrifice fly to left to give New Paltz its first lead.

The Golden Eagles got right back in the game with a run of their own in the home half of the second inning. A passed ball advanced third baseman Dan Hurliman to third, which allowed him to score easily on second baseman Wesley Burghardt's single through the left side to tie the game.

In the top of the sixth, the Hawks found themselves with runners on the corners after back-to-back singles by Guido and senior left fielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon). Prescia followed with a groundout to third, but it was enough to bring Guido in to score and give the Hawks the lead. Pinnola followed Prescia with a base hit to center, scoring Repetto to leave the Hawks with a 3-1 edge.

New Paltz picked up another run in the eighth when Repetto and Prescia stroked back-to-back doubles to push the Hawk advantage to 4-1. Brockport found its rhythm in the bottom of the inning, however, as it rallied to tie the game. Left fielder Pete Wilson singled in Burghardt from third with one out to score the first run of the inning for the Golden Eagles. With two outs and runners on second and third, designated hitter Zack Lander singled to center to clear the bases and tie the game.

Junior starting pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) had his best outing of the season, tossing six innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out three batters and allowed five hits, but did not earn a decision in the contest. Brockport starter Matthew Coleman went eight innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four. Coleman was also unable to record a decision.

Pinnola led the Hawks on the afternoon, knocking in three RBI and scoring a run in his 2-for-6 effort. Prescia went 2-for-6 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Guido batted 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Repetto turned in a 3-for-5 outing with three runs scored.

Wilson and Burghardt each hit 3-for-5 for Brockport, picking up an RBI and scoring a run each. Lander went 1-for-5, but picked up two RBI for the Golden Eagles.

The Hawks return to New Paltz for their home opener on Tuesday, April 2, as they play host to SUNY Oneonta at Loren Campbell Memorial Field. First pitched is scheduled for 3 p.m.
