Wheaton scores 18 runs on 21 hits

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College senior outfielder Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) knocked in a game-high four runs to lead the Lyons, ranked no.10 overall in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, over WPI by an 18-2 score in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday evening at Sidell Stadium.

The Engineers were tabbed as the home team for today's contest in a makeup game originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 in Worcester, Mass.

Senior right-hander Frank Holbrook (Middletown, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) ran his record to 5-0 overall scattering 11 hits over six innings of work, two runs (both earned), zero walks and two strikeouts. Junior Mike Bisceglia (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown), freshman Jordan Jenkins (Scituate, Mass./Norwell) and junior Gordy Thomas (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) blanked the Engineers over the remaining innings of the contest in respective order.

WPI freshman Miles Schuler (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Mesa) took the loss on five-and-two-thirds innings, 11 hits, nine runs (all earned), two walks and three strikeouts.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth, the Lyons took command of the lead with four runs on four hits, zero errors and one runner left on base. Ryan plated a pair of runners with a double to right-center field and sophomore Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) drove in two more with a single to center field.

The Lyons also added five runs in the sixth and another five-spot in the seventh inning. Senior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) highlighted the ten-run offensive spurt with three RBI's while Ryan added two RBI's.

Ryan went 3-for-3 with one walk, two runs scored and four RBI's to lead the offense. In total, Wheaton had seven players have multi-hit games including De la Cruz, Jensen, Gusovsky, sophomore Tyler Contillo (Montville, Conn./Montville) and freshmen Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Matt Knight (Fremont, Calif./Washington).

Wheaton (14-5, 8-0 NEWMAC) hosts Coast Guard in a NEWMAC matchup tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Sidell Stadium. WPI (9-15, 4-7 NEWMAC) travels to MIT on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
