Waltham, Mass.-Senior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored to lead the Rhode Island College baseball team to an 8-5 victory over Brandeis University at Stein Diamond in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

Rhode Island College has won back-to-back tilts with the victory and improves its record to 6-15, while Brandies falls to 6-13.

Senior right-hander Mike Farias (West Greenwich, RI) picked up the win for the Anchormen after allowing just four runs on eight hits and one walk through seven strong innings. Farias improved his record to 2-2 and struck out a career-high nine batters along the way.

Senior right-hander Chris Mann (West Warwick, RI) came on in the bottom of the eighth to earn his second save of the season after he retired six straight Judges to close out the ballgame.

On the other end, sophomore right-hander Kyle Brenner (Brookfield, MA) was tagged with the loss (0-5), despite scattering just three earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 8.2 innings on the hill, while striking out eight.

Aside from Carey's performance at the dish, senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) went 2-for-5 with two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored to lead the way, while junior first baseman Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI) added three RBI following his fifth inning home run over the left field fence.

Brandeis opened the scoring in the first inning with one run, though the damage could have been worse. Three straight singles to open the inning loaded the bases, but the Judges' only run came on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Tom McCarthy (Yonkers, NY) as Farias induced a pop-up and groundout to first to avoid more trouble.

The Anchormen took advantage of a costly error in the top of the second to score three unearned runs. With two outs and a runner on first, sophomore second baseman Tyler Collins (Cranston, RI) reached on a ball booted at second base. A wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, and Hubbard followed with a single down the left field line that put RIC ahead, 2-1. Hubbard then stole second and scored Carey's single to left.

Brandeis responded in the bottom of the second, however, loading the bases for the second straight inning with one out. Farias got a strikeout for the second out, but Judge senior catcher Chris Ferro (Walpole, MA)) knocked home two runs with a drive to left, tying the game. A wild pitch plated rookie center fielder Liam O'Connor (Avon, CT) and the Judges went back ahead, 4-3. Farias settled down after the second inning, though, retiring nine in a row and 15 of the next 17 hitters to allow the visitors to climb back into the contest.

RIC tied the game in the fourth on Carey's two-out double over the left fielder's head. That set up Rainville's three-run homer in the fifth. Freshman catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) doubled to lead off the inning and junior DH Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) reached on an error. Rainville then turned on Brenner's first offering, sending it over the left field fence for his first round-tripper of the season.

In the eighth inning, with Farias out of the game, Brandeis looked to rally as they loaded the bases with no outs on an error, a single and a walk. Mann came on and minimized the damage. Brandeis scored once on a deep sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Dan Gad (Mansfield, MA), but Mann got two comebackers to the mound to escape the jam. RIC got the run back thanks to two Brandeis errors in the ninth. The Judges were unable to return the favor after O'Connor led off the bottom of the frame by reaching on a miscue, as Mann picked up his second save of the season.

For Brandeis, O'Connor went 2-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Ferro was 2-5 with two RBI.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at home against UMass Boston on Saturday, April 6 (noon).
