A five-run first inning by the Warhawks led to a 7-3 victory over UW-Superior Friday at Miller Stadium at Prucha Field in Whitewater. The win propels the Warhawks to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while Superior falls to 8-8 and 0-1.
The Warhawks batted around in the first inning on their way to recording five runs. The Warhawks scored in a variety of ways, including some help from the visiting team. A bases loaded wild pitch made it 1-0, a throwing error made it 2-0, a single with runners on the corners made it 3-0, a sacrifice fly made it 4-0, and another single with runners on the corners made it 5-0.
UW-W extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls).
The Yellowjackets put a dent in the Warhawk lead scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it 7-3, but Warhawk reliever Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) slammed the door shut on any ideas of a comeback. Liston pitched two and a third, giving up just two hits and striking out two.
Quintin Zander (Black Earth/Wisconsin Heights), a senior lefty, started the game for the Warhawks and earned the win, his first of the season. Zander struck out two in the game.
Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) extended his team leading hitting streak to nine games, going 1-for-5 in the game with one run and one RBI. Three other Warhawks collected multiple hits and one, Herum, collected multiple RBIs.
TJ Evanson, first baseman for UW-Superior, and Jeff Miller, catcher, each tallied three hits in the game.
The Warhawks and Yellowjackets will clash in a single game on Saturday at 4:00 pm at Miller Stadium at Prucha Field in Whitewater.
