Four Homers Lead Warhawks to Win over Superior

More news about: UW-Whitewater

The Warhawks used several big innings and four homeruns to propel them to a 17-7 victory over UW-Superior in seven innings at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium in Whitewater on Saturday.  The Warhawks remain undefeated in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a record of 4-0, and improve to 12-3 overall.  Superior drops to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC.

The Warhawks chased the Superior starter out of the game early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first without recording an out.  Both runs were scored on bases loaded walks.  Jake Lewis, the Superior reliever, came into the game with the bases loaded and gave up another run on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 in favor of UW-W.  Another walk loaded the bases yet again and David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) blooped a single to center to score two more to make it 5-0 before the Yellowjackets could escape the inning.

Superior made it 5-3 when junior right fielder Tom Fairbanks came up with the bases loaded in the top of the third and ripped a ball over the head of Whitewater center fielder Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) for a triple.

The 'Jackets took the lead in the top of the fourth scoring four runs on three hits to make it 7-5.  With runners on the corners, and one out, left fielder Robbie Veith singled to plate the runner from third.  The next batter, junior Wyatt Soderquist, hit a sharp liner up the middle, but a misplay by Friend sent the ball all the way to the wall and all three runners scored.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth the Warhawks put together a rally.  Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) started it off with a single through the left side and Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) followed with a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third.  A single by JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) scored one and then Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) belted a three run homer over the left field wall to snatch back the lead, 9-7, for the Warhawks.

After a Superior pitching change in the sixth the Warhawks remained relentless.  Friend led off the inning with a solo homer to center to give UW-W a 10-7 advantage.  After a walk, a double, a single, an out, and another double, UW-W found themselves with a 13-7 lead.  Friend started the sixth inning scoring, and ended it, plating two more with a single down the right field line to make it 15-7.

Fon and Herum belted solo homers in the bottom of the seventh to give the Warhawks a 17-7 lead and a win by virtue of the ten run rule after seven innings.

Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) earned his first win of the season pitching three and a third and giving up just one hit and striking out three.  Superior used five different pitchers in the game and the Warhawks scored on each one.

The Warhawks' two through five hitters, Friend, Fon, Herum and Pierce, combined to go 10-for-15 with eight RBIs and eleven runs scored.  JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) chipped in as well going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs.

The Warhawks and Yellowjackets will meet again on Sunday in a doubleheader at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium in Whitewater beginning at noon.
