Ferguson Longballs, Solid Pitching Leads Baseball to Pair of Victories

More news about: Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Sean Ferguson (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) launched one home run in each game and drove in five runs, while junior Alex Basso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and sophomore Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) both went complete games to bookend Manhattanville baseball's doubleheader sweep over the Wilkes Colonels, 7-2 in game one and 8-5 in game two.

Basso was on his game all day in game one which started off with him working around a leadoff double in the first inning by getting a groundout and punching out the next two via strikeout.

The Valiant offense assembled a picket fence on the scoreboard as the team plated a run in each of the first three innings. In the first, sophomore Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) singled then stole second and third before tagging and coming home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ferguson. In the second inning sophomore Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before coming home on a sacrifice fly that made the game 2-0. In the third with two down and down 0-1 in the count, Ferguson sent his first home run of the season sailing over the fence down the left field line to put his squad up by three.

Meanwhile in the top of the innings, Basso continued to mow down the Colonels before having to labor through the fourth inning. The leadoff batter walked followed by designated hitter Dan Pisanchyn reached on a throwing error, followed by a wild pitch to move the runners up to second and third. The next ground ball was also booted in the field and allowed both runners to score without being charged to Basso's ledger.

The bottom of the fifth saw freshman Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) send a double deep down the left field line just ahead of Euvino knocking a triple all the way over the centerfielder's head and off the base of the outfield fence to score Nunez. Senior Johnny LoVetere (Southbury, Conn./Canterbury) was up next and doubled to score Euvino, and was brought around by the next batter Ferguson, who singled to make the score 6-2.

Manhattanville tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as junior Hans Arias (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) brought home senior John Bucci (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) with a single and was able to stay in a rundown long enough for Bucci to touch the plate.

Basso continued to throw well and threw identical sixth and seventh innings after working around one out singles in each of the frames. The junior capped off his best outing of the season with a strikeout of Steven Ruch to end the ball game and give Manhattanville the game one victory. He improves his record to 4-3 on the season and lowering his season ERA to 3.82 after going all seven innings and allowing two unearned runs on nine hits while striking out a season-best eight batters.

In game two, Lyon was tasked to match Basso's performance and did just that through the first five innings of his outing. He did allow an early run in the first inning after the Colonels led off the game with a double, and later scored the run on a sacrifice fly.

Manhattanville's offense didn't score run-by-run as they did in the first game as they went for the big-inning and scored five in the bottom of the second. The frame started out with Ferguson right in the middle of things once again with a leadoff double, sophomore Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) chased Ferguson home with a double of his own to tie the game at one. Brady reached on an infield single, and two batters later Arias drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. Nunez singled and then advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, who was trying to pick off the quick freshman. Euvino then singled through the left side to chase home Nunez and put the Valiants ahead 5-1.

Lyon retired the side in order in each of the next three innings while throwing a conventional 25 pitches to get the nine outs including an impressive six-pitch top of the fifth inning.

Manhattanville tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Bucci worked the count and doubled down the left field line on a 3-2 pitch. Bucci then stole third as junior Elias Tsouristakis (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) struck out swinging to put a runner on third with one out. Up next was Arias, who poked a base knock into short right field to give the Valiants a 6-1 edge.

In the bottom of the fifth the offense was firing again as LoVetere got things started with a base hit deep in the hole at third base and was moved up to second as the ball was thrown out of play by the third baseman. Up next was Ferguson, who capped off his career day with his second home run of the day on the first pitch of the at bat.

In the top of the sixth, Lyon ran into a bit of a speed bump after cruising through the previous three innings. The first two batters singled and were moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Joe Dantas singled deep in the hole at shortstop to plate one runner. Up next was Stephen Ruch who put together one of the best at-bats of the season, after falling behind 0-2 Ruch worked the count full and fouled off each of the next three pitches. On the 11th pitch of the at-bat, Ruch turned on the pitch and parked the ball well over the left field wall and onto the adjacent softball field to pull his squad back within three at 8-5.

The Valiants went down in the bottom of the sixth and sent Lyon back to the bump in search of his first complete game of the season. The sophomore got three straight outs by way of groundout, fly out and groundout to end the ballgame and give Manhattanville the doubleheader sweep over its Freedom Conference foe.

Lyon improved his record to 2-4 as he picked up his second straight victory while going all seven innings and allowed five runs on five hits.

Manhattanville (8-16, 5-7 Freedom) will get back to action tomorrow afternoon in non-conference action as the team travels to Reading, Pa. for a date with the Alvernia Crusaders for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Wilkes (11-9, 3-7 Freedom) will also be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they make-up a pair from earlier in the season with cross-town conference rival King's at home with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
