Thomas More Defeats Wittenberg, 16-7, in Slugfest

(SPRINGFIELD, Ohio) - The Thomas More College baseball team defeated Wittenberg University, 16-7, tonight (Tuesday, April 9, 2013) in a non-conference game at Carleton Davidson Stadium in Springfield, Ohio.

With the win, the Saints improve to 15-6 on the season and the Tigers fall to 12-8.

Thomas More scored four runs in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth, one the sixth, one the seventh and five in the eighth, while holding Wittenberg to two in the first, one the second, three in the fifth and one the eighth for the 16-7 victory. Each team had 15 hits in the game, while Wittenberg committed five errors and the Saints only committed two.

Junior center fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led Saints at the plate as he was four-for-six with three doubles, three runs batted-in and four runs scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior left fielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-five with one double, a RBI and three runs scored, senior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-six with a home run, three RBI and a run scored and junior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was two-for-four with a double and three runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher Tyler Jones (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) started and had a no-decision as he pitched four and a third innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and struck out four. Senior pitcher Mike Hager (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win as he pitched two-thirds of an inning gave up three hits, but didn't allow a run and struck out one. Four other Thomas More pitchers pitched the final four innings and gave up only one run on three hits.

Thomas More returns to the diamond on Friday (April 12) when it opens a three-game series with Grove City College with a single nine-inning game. First pitch in Grove City, Pennsylvania is scheduled for 3 p.m.
