Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team rallied from several deficits, but could not hold the lead in an 8-7 loss to Southwestern University Tuesday night in Belton. The loss evens the Cru's record at 16-16 on the year. The Pirates move to 3-30 on the season with the victory.

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Southwestern bunched four walks around two hits in the frame. Zack Whiddon tripled and scored on a balk in the bottom of the first and Tyler Taute doubled and scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second to cut it to 3-2. After Southwestern scored in the top of the third, UMHB put three on the board in the bottom of that inning. Seth Mogavero scored on a wild pitch and Taute doubled home two more runs to give the Cru a 5-4 lead. Both teams put two runs up in the fifth. UMHB's runs came on Taute's RBI single and Josh Cruz's RBI hit-by-pitch. The Pirates would retake the lead in the top of the sixth on Colten Shea's two-run single. UMHB loaded the bases on a pair of two-out walks and a catcher's interference in the bottom of the eighth, but could not push across a run. The Cru also put the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to score.

Taute was 3-5 for UMHB with three RBI. Whiddon added two hits, but the rest of the team combined for just one hit. Sam VanHoozer took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-2 on the season. Zachary Lynch had three hits for Southwestern as the Pirates put together a 12-hit attack. Carl Mueller earned the win to even his record at 1-1 and Nino Tutino pitched the ninth inning to nail down his first save of the year.

The Cru will continue its home stand with the final American Southwest Conference West Division series of the season this weekend. UMHB will welcome Schreiner University to Red Murff Field for a three-game series opening with a 7:00 PM single game on Friday.
